JULY
The Salt Lake Tribune and the University co-sponsored
the 20th World Championship Trials for Women's gymnastics at the end of last
month from the 27th to the 30th and I
had to work overtime. The meet started at 7:30 but we had to set up and clean
the restrooms each night so we worked pretty late with over time. In fact I didn’t get home from work until 3 in the
morning and then slept in this morning until 12:30. I called mom to tell her to
watch ABC's Wide World of Sports so she
could see where I worked because it was being broadcast today. I didn't go to church today as I was just too exhausted. Fran went
to Sacrament, however. My feelings were
still hurt from last night by Gary Ratliff and Dean Guthrie and I was sad for most of the day. It was too hot today
to do anything but just hang out. Last Friday Gary Ratliff gave me $50 for
working on his genealogy which I would have done for free, He also gave me a
person journal so I can use when this one fills up. I watched an episode
of "I Claudius" on PBS. It is
great. I called Steve Madsen up to see
if we could come down to Provo for the
4th of July. Steve said they hadn’t made any other plans as Meg is so along
pregnant so i suppose we will.

I never wrote why I was so
upset with Gary and Dean other than perhaps I was excluded from being with them
while they monitored the arena while I was relegated to the working the
concourse, keeping it clean of litter and keeping the restrooms stocked. If it
was something more I can’t remember what except that I had developed an
infatuation for Gary.
Mom called this morning and
said that Cousin Kay had her baby, a boy she named John Clay Cooper born 1 July
1979. I went into work from 8-5. Gary Ratliff had a doctor's appointment this morning. It's not as fun down here when
he's not in his office. I spent the day running the buffer on the concourse waxing
my area and cleaning up the arena floor from the Gymnastic meet from last week.
I was still upset at Gary and Dean Guthrie
so I was kind of cool to them. I
tried to articulate what I was feeling
so I could get over it. Gary is the best boss and one of the nicest
persons I have known and I don’t want to
do anything to jeopardize our working relationship over such a minor issue. However I really was hurt so it's not
that minor to me. I told Gary and Dean that I'd come in at 7 in the morning from
now on to take Dean's place . Ugh. I hate to do it but Gary's been good to me.
I got $192 in cash for working the Gymnastics event. After work Fran and I went to the show and saw
"Buck Rogers in the 25th Century". It was fun.
I was at work at 7 and worked until 4. I
worked with Kay Wiker and Clifford Garland cleaning athletic coaches offices in
the morning. I hate it. Yuck! But oh well! I do like getting off earlier. I
told Gary and Dean I was sorry for being so sullen the past few days. I've
completely forgive any real or imaginary offenses as Fran always says. I don’t
think they ever did figure out why I was so upset. Gary gave me a belt buckle
today of the Salt Lake Temple embossed on it.
He said he got a clean bill of health
for his back and was released to go back to work. I worked in my area and I brought my radio
which made the day go so much faster. In the evening it was really hot but we
went to the paperback bookstore and bought about 10 dollars’ worth of books to
read. Gary gave me $30 today for some of the extra work I did last week.
I had the day off so Fran and
I went to Provo to watch the parade and have dinner with Meg and Steve Madsen.
Well the parade was a joke so we left when we found out that it wouldn't come
down as far as Fairmount Square. We went
up to BYU to see the campus and then
over to Dees for some lunch. We missed
Meg and Steve this morning but in the afternoon we caught up with them and we
had a nice BBQ. We mainly just talked and talked as I hadn't seen them since
last February. It sure was good to see them again as they are like a cool drink
of water to a thirsty man. We stayed until about 7:30 then drove back home. It
was really hot again today about 95
degrees. Our little duplex was really hot again inside but still home sweet
home compared to Grantsville. Also I'd never live in Provo again. What a joke
.
I went back to work with Kay Wiker and
Clifford Garland cleaning offices until 8 and then I went and cleaned my
section of restrooms. Before going home Gary Ratliff asked Fran and me if we’d go see Superman with him and his wife
Gabriella. I said sure. After I came from
work at 4, Fran had us go to First Security Bank downtown to open a checking account
and to send her mother a $100 money order. For supper we had a large dinner
salad again . That tasted so good on such hot summer days. At 7 Fran and I went to the show and saw Heaven Can
Wait with Warren Beatty and Julie Christie in it. It was really good. Fran received
a letter today from her sister Julie Helton. She said that their sister Connie was
being a real snake about the wedding of her
daughter Jody. Fran hasn't even received a wedding announcement yet and the
wedding is this August. It was hot again at 95 degrees although it was a pretty
day. Gas prices have gone over a $1 a gallon in California and here they are at
88 cents
I worked from 7 this morning until
4 this afternoon when I got to go home. there I fixed an ice cream pie for dessert
tonight and then we got ready to get ready to go over to Gary and Gabby's
place. I was frustrated when I went to lock the doors at the Special event
Center as I forgot my keys so I had to race back home again. Pat Winter's
father died today so he didn't do a lock up and I said I would do it. Over at the
Ratliff’s we chit chatted for a while before going to the Arcade Theater on 9th
West and about 4th South to see Superman. Boy was it good. Fran was really
enchanted by it. Afterwards we
went back to Gary's place and played dominoes and ate the dessert I
brought over. His kids sure are cute. We finally were home by 11:30
Fran left to go see some old
friends today that she knew when going
to school at the U of U. So I went to the Special event Center and typed up on
Gary Ratliff's genealogy for most of the
afternoon. I came home around 6:30 and
watched TV with Fran for the rest of the night.

When I didn’t write much it’s
because generally I was at Spencer Orson Hall’s men’s room cruising. The stalls
there had peep holes in them where guys cruising could spy on each other
jacking off.
I missed Priesthood and Sunday
School but did make in to Sacrament. The bishop's son came home from his mission
and spoke the entire time. In the evening we went over to our next door
neighbors, Steve and Sandy Jenkins to help Sandy arrange some dried flowers as I had learned that from working at
Candlelight Floral. Only thing in the news is about Skylab which is falling out of orbit
but no one seems to know where and when. Another hot summer day.
I worked from 7 to 4 mostly in the hot sun down at Rice Stadium
where we worked repairing some astro-turf. It's just sweltering down there. Pat
Winter's father's funeral was today so
he didn't come in to work. I'm sun burned on my arms but my neck hasn't
blistered. For supper Fran fixed spaghetti and a nice salad. I am drinking Iced Pero instead of tea by the gallons, It’s much more
refreshing to me than simply soda pop.. It was close to 100 today. I worked
primary with Gary Ratliff and Dean Guthrie today down at Rice Stadium. Oh
yes tickets for the Shawn Cassidey
concert went on sale today.
We worked from 7 to 10 tonight
at the Rice Stadium patching Astro Turf. We had to work at night because boy
was it hot today 104 degrees. We worked until 10 as it was quite comfortable at
night. Gary cut his finger deeply cutting turf. I told him to be careful with that
from my blood poisoning experience at Candlelight Floral. We found the lost Walkie Talkie today thank
goodness as they are worth $1000.
Sky Lab came crashing down
today over parts of the Indian Ocean and the Australian desert We wanted it to
come down on the Rice Stadium at the U of U without anyone being hurt, I guess.
I worked again from 7 in the evening unto 11:30 at night mainly at the Rice Stadium repairing
astro turf. It was less hot today only 99 degrees. I received a letter from
Grandma Johnson today. She said they went to Stamford for the 4th of July Rodero. She also said
little John Clay Cooper was a butter ball. Grandma has 8 great grandchildren now
with Donna expecting in November. Denise so far is her only great
granddaughter. Chris and Craig Johnson, my cousin John Johnson's oldest boys
are the oldest then James, Denise then
Neil Ballard, Kay's boy, the Michael then Kennie and now John Clay Cooper. Fran
is making herself a pretty dress.
Gary Ratliff came to work with
a bad ear infection that had gotten so bad that I took him to a clinic to get
some antibiotics. Later he just went home suffering. Dean was in charged for the
rest of the day and we finally got the astro turf finished. I hope. Fran
said Paulette has filed for divorce
again from Kent so I guess maybe this time they will go through with it. Fran
said also that Linda Suazo came over yesterday evening from Grantsville while I was at work. She needed $100 which
Fran helped her out with. A friend of Fran’s
from Midvale died and tomorrow she is going to the funeral. So far this year Grandma Williams died
Grandma Suazo died, Pat Winter's father died but I didn't know him, And now
this friend of Fran's. John Allen an economist
says we are headed for a
recession because of the inflation and energy crisis. There's no such
thing as the good old days. in the 70s we had inflation and the energy crisis.
In the sixties we had Vietnam, and race
riots. In the 1950s the cold war and juvenile delinquency, in the Forties
WWII and the atomic bomb and in the
1930's the Great Depression. May only the 1920s was a good time even with prohibition. Fran sewed some curtains for the bathroom window
today.
I just worked my regular 7 to
4 o'clock shift as I didn't have to work on the Rice Stadium Astro Turf. It was
a hot, hot day. Fran received an invitation finally to her niece Peggy's
wedding and she said she would like to go home to Minnesota for it. Fran went
to her friends funeral today and she sat next to her old boyfriend Brent however
he couldn't remember her name ha! She thought that was funny. We were both too
hot and tried to go to the show so I went the Deseret Book Store and bought
some indices for Gary's Book of Remembrance that I am compiling for him. Fran
went out with Sandy Jenkins from next door to buy some material to sew a
dress. She made a brown one that I am
crazy about.
Fran has definitely decided to go back to
Minnesota for a couple of weeks to spend some time with her family. She wants
to go back to help her mom move and clean house plus her mother is going in for
more chemotherapy for her cancer. She wants to stay at least to August 4, which
is her Nieces' wedding. I went to the Special Event Center and sat in Gary's
office typing up Gary's genealogy. Pat
Winter was there mopping up the
area so I talked to him some. I was home
by 5 and we were both tired so Fran and I stayed home instead of going out. It
was very hot today 105 degrees however it was a clear pretty day. It hasn't
rain in a long time ''
I didn't go to Priesthood but I did go to
Sunday School. Fran and I decided we needed a better attitude towards Utah
Wards especially ours. I just get so tired of always introducing myself all the time. We went to
Paulette Gasparac’s Rose Park Sacrament meeting because Greg Stembridge asked
us over for dinner We had barbequed chicken, potato salad and corn on the cob.
We both enjoy Greg a lot. He said he's living by himself now and in away is a
waste of a great personality since he is so fun to be with. President Carter
gave his energy speech tonight and said he wants the U.S. to cut consumption.
We watched I Claudius instead of his speech.
I didn't go into work
today but rather called in sick as I had
so much to do with Fran to get her ready for her trip to Minnesota tomorrow.
She's taking the bus back to Kasson Minnesota and is supposed to leave out at
the terminal tomorrow at 6 in the morning. I had to go to the bank, do the wash
at a laundry mat, buy the bus ticket and go to ZCMI. I had just a
whole lot to do. Gary Ratliff, however, dropped by to pick up the Book
of Remembrance to show his mom and dad. In the news President Carter is getting tough on the energy crisis and
gave another speech about reducing the
consumption of oil.
I didn’t have to go into work
until 5 this late afternoon because we wanted to work at night painting the astro turf in the Rice Stadium. I only
worked until 11 but had been up since 5 this morning with no time to take a
nap. I drove Fran down to the Greyhound station on South Temple so she could
catch her bus. It took her an hour of waiting for her to even board the bus So
she didn't leave until 7. I had a real deep lonesome feeling tonight when I
slept in bed without her but I had Sam at least. I went to the genealogical
library before going into work today.
Went back to work at 7
cleaning offices. At 8:30 our new stage came in and I had to help unload it as it was super heavy as its made
out of metal. By coincidence the driver
and truck came from Owatonna, Minnesota which is about 30 miles from Kasson. He
said he knew the Fuchs family. It was very hot and very tired when we were
done. I am mad at Clifford for standing around and not helping much with the
stage but Gary got even with him and made him and some of the others go
paint more on the astroturf. President
Kimball is in the hospital for a checkup
but it's not supposed to be serious. But then at 83 anything is serious. In the
evening I just took Sam for a walk and bought some groceries and dog food
before retiring. Fran should be home by now. That's such a long ride by bus
about 1800 miles. It's only 750 miles to
Orange County, California. I am really sore from the heavy lifting at work
today. Oh my aching body.
I went into work from 7 to 4.
Kay Wiker is on vacation starting today and Rand Hendrickson is coming in at 7 to take his place for a
while. It was a slow day and the only excitement was when this afternoon Dean Guthrie said that the
other crew members think I spend too
much time with Gary Ratliff in his office. I was really hurt because of the
back biting and that they would say that about me. They were upset with Pat
Winter also and when Gary heard this he called them all into his office and ripped them good. He said no one is in his
office without his permission and if
they don't like it too bad. Gary said if
they would do their jobs better, I wouldn’t have to come in and clean his
office. He told them to stop being petty
and picky. I haven’t talk to Jeff, Rand
or Cliff since then. Yesterday Rand, Cliff, and Kay lost the $40 water jug by
leaving it down at the stadium and it got ripped off. I called Fran today and
she said she missed the bus in Omaha and
a had a three hour delay before catching another bus to get home. Hort! Hot! Hot!
At work, Cliff, Rand, and Jeff
are still bitching about Pat and I being
in Gary's office too much. I was called
to Gary's office 4 times by either Dean or Gary for several reasons. One of
which I had to type a letter for Gary and Dean. However every time I was there those guys sputtered. They’re so
stupid and immature. They think they are going to get me or Pat in trouble
while in reality, Gary is about fed up with them. I only worked from 7 to 3 today as Dean let me off early to take him
down to pick up his truck he had in for repairs. I talked to Fran and she is
really manipulated by her parents as she is afraid of losing their approval at
any given moment. This evening Pat Winter and I went to the Tower Theater to
see Superman after eating dinner here at home. Ten years ago I watched TV with
mom and dad as the Apollo 10 land on the
moon.
I went up to the Special Event
Center around 2 after trying to clean up the house but I
can't seem to keep up with it. It seems to just get more and more cluttered.
It's so hot that anything left out in the kitchen spoils immediately. At work I
typed up some genealogy on my brother in law Dennis Wachs’ family for Charline.
I stayed there were it was cool until about 7. Pat Winter came up and I talked
to him some. Of all people I got a phone call from Bill Hall by old dormitory
friend from BYU. He saw my number in the
phonebook and wanted to visit.
Additional Material
Bill Hall was my first
infatuation at BYU. He used to wrestle me a lot and sometimes would get a hard
on when he pinned me. He was just a kid only about 18.
I didn't attend church at all today. Fran
called me this evening but I called her right back so it wouldn't cost her
folks anything. She's at her sister Connie's home now at Rothsay, Minnesota
with her mother. Her dad is with her brother Ronnie at Brainerd. I guess their
new home isn't quite ready yet to move into. Fran said she had to put her dad's
cat to sleep as he had her for 16 years and was failing in heath. Fran had
brought the cat from Tulsa for her dad. She said her mother gave her a portrait
of Peter Svee her great grandfather. That was really neat. Fran said that her
mother didn't even cry after leaving their home in Kasson.
Additional Material
While cruising around Liberty
Park I saw this guy about my age giving me the eye. I stopped the car and
visited with him and asked him back to the duplex. We fooled around and had
oral sex but when he tried to penetrate me it was too painful as I had never
done that since once as an adolescent with Phil Casas so I wouldn’t let him
fuck me.
Back at work from 7 to 4 and
Clifford Garland didn’t even come in this morning until 8 so Jeff, Rand, and I cleaned the offices ourselves.
Both Kay Wiker and Dean Guthrie are now on vacation. I took it slow and easy today and helped Gary
Ratliff figure out the best way to put the new stage together for the Shawn Cassidy concert. I just had peanut
butter and jelly sandwiches for lunch as I have run out of money until the next
paycheck. I wrote Fran a letter today
and also wrote one to mom and Dad. It finally rain most of the day
again. Sure feels good to have it cool off the heat wave.
I and the day off for Pioneer
Day and didn't do anything but clean the house, walk Sam and watched TV. I am
still reading Roots but am almost
through with it. I talk to Fran today
and she's still staying at Connie's. She wants me to drive back to Minnesota to
pick her up. Maybe I will but that would a very long drive for me, It was hot
again at 95 degrees. Theodore Bundy was found guilty of murdering women in Florida. He once was a student in Utah
where he was a serial killer here.
Additional Material
While Fran was gone I cave
into some of my homosexual proclivities
that of course I never wrote about. I cruised the toilets at Pioneer Park that
you could access off of Third West back then. I picked up this kid who was
riding his teen speed who was cruising me and we drove up to the Special event
Center since I knew no one would be there. I took him down to the men’s
basketball locker room where there were still towels and jock straps lying
about and I had him lie on one of the benches and I had oral sex with him.
After I took him back to Pioneer Park I learned from talking to him he was only
17 years old which totally freaked me out and never would have had sex with him
if I didn’t think he was older.
I worked 7-4 but stayed until
5 talking to Gary Ratliff. Cliff didn't come in today . After work Gary asked
me over to his house for dinner and also w wanted to go with me the genealogical
library. So I rushed home, walked Sam, changed clothes then drove over to Gary
and Gabby's who had fixed Lasagna. It was delicious. We then went to the
library and stayed from 7-10 looking at wills and land deeds but primarily
showing Gary how to use the resources there
. He really became excited as he caught the genealogy bug. He said he really
wants to get into it now. I was really tired when I came home as I have been getting
little sleep and I will be dead at work tomorrow. Gary wants me to type up some group sheets for him
tomorrow so it should be an easy
day. I won't be going back to Minesota
as I don't have the money or time.
I had a shocker phone call
tonight at 10:30 when I was half asleep. It was from Kathy Austrauff of all
people! She was trying to find Mike Allred’s address. I hadn’t seen her since
1974 at BYU. Weird and more weird. We visited for about 15 minutes with not a
whole lot to say. I worked from 7-4 and
mainly typed up Gary's genealogy as it was such a slow day. I felt rather peculiar
however as everyone's nose was out of joint because Gary had the rest of
them work their tails off. I think Gary is going to have to
let one of the part time kids go due to budget reductions. After work I
went to see a doctor about a growth I noticed on my hand. He said I will have
to have surgery to remove it. I will see. It was a hot day with thunder and
showers making it muggy out. I am still weirded out by Kathy's phone call. Kay
Wiker came back to work.
At work I typed up some more
genealogy for Gary and I was paid $70 from
AMF and $911 for my paycheck although I only cleared $605. Off work, I went to
the bank an deposited my check and made a $200 money order to send to Fran.
With the AMF, I bought myself a 10 speed bike
for $67. I wrote Fran a letter tonight and mailed her the money order.
At 6 I picked up Gary and his father in
law to go to the genealogy library where
we stayed until 10. Afterwards they treated me to dinner at Village Inn. Gary
said he wasn’t feeling too well when we left.
It was a hot day and still 84
degrees at 10:30 I didn't get home until 11:30. I guess I will go to the show
with Kay Wiker and Pat Winter tomorrow.
I tried cleaning the house
until Pat Winter came over to help me put my bike together. Around 6 o'clock
Kay Wiker came over and joined Pat and me. I them fixed them spaghetti dinner.
They wanted to see “Amityville Horror” but
Kay didn't want to go to a drive-in so by the time we went to a walk in
the movie was sold out. So instead we
went and saw the Muppet Movie at the Trolley Square Theater which was cut but
not great. Kay and Pat bickered and quarrel the whole time like little kids. I read in the papers that
Dean Guthrie’s’ Father Vernon wad arrested. What a shocker. Fran called today and I sent her money to
come home on.
I slept in until 10:30 from
being out so late yesterday. I finished reading "What Every Happened to
the Class of 65" after reading it all day. In the evening I watch "A
Fire in the sky" a movie about a comet that hits and destroys Phoenix. It
was really hot today over 100 degrees . I water the grass day and night and it’s
still burning up. I fixed some fried
chicken for dinner tonight which I shared with Sam. I missed an episode of I Claudius tonight. Ted Bundy was found guilty of
killing those co-eds in Florida after escaping from Colorado.
At work I heard that Shawn
Cassidy might cancel due to poor ticket sales. I guess we will find out
tomorrow. Dolly Parton is coming in September. We spent most of the day putting
the stage together to see how it’s going to fit. Dean Guthrie was real cheerful
so I guess he doesn't know about his dad. In the evening Steve Madsen called and we visited for a while. They
wanted to know how Fran and her mother is doing. I told them that she had gone
back to Minnesota. They wanted to know if Fran was willing to help with the
birth of this baby that is due August 8th.
Today I could tell that Dean Guthrie found out
about his dad having been arrested over the weekend. He didn't say
anything except that he had personal problems at home
and that he was upset. I didn't see Gary hardly any today. The Shawn
Cassidy concert was cancelled for sure . In 21 of his concerts had been cancelled
so another teenage idol bites the dust.
We took down the stage today so everyone was on the rag. Kay Wiker is
mad at Gary and Dean for getting on his case for some reason yesterday. Jeff Chapman
and Cliff Garland hang around with each
other a lot now but they are pretty
worthless. Pat and I are starting to pair off too. All of it is stupid So it
was kind of a tiring day. Cliff makes me mad because he stands and watches the
rest of us work.
AUGUST
1 August 1979 Wednesday
At work we started to strip
the varnish off the basketball court so
we could reseal it next week, which is major. I had a huge burrito for lunch
which was so much so I shared it with Pat Winter and Gary Ratliff. After
work I went to the bank and
cashed a check so I could buy gas. I also paid $200 for rent today. Driving up the
incline on Bryan Street the car died! I couldn’t get it started until later in
the evening. Perhaps from the heat but I sure am concerned about that. I called
Fran tonight and she was playing cards with her family. I also talked to her
niece Bonnie Fuchs who was going on her first date tonight.
We worked mainly today stripping the varnish off the basketball
court floor so we can reseal it next
week. Gary called in the full time crew
yesterday and chewed us out for being pretty and told us to start getting our
act together. The ABC television money came today and I received $295 in cash.
I put $255 in the credit union. In the evening I went grocery shopping and
bought stuff to make dinner for Gary and
Pat tomorrow, In the evening Steve Madsen dropped by the duplex before going
home to Provo. He said Meg may have her baby
this Saturday after all. In the evening I called Mike Allred as he was
on my mind and he’s now living in Ogden working at the Dee’s Hospital there.
He’s completely done with school finally. I asked him to come down to see
me next Saturday.
At work we are still stripping
the floor and painting some of it. While
cleaning up, Gay said the paint
was water base so turning the water hose
on the paint brush, paint sprayed all over me at it was actually oil based. It
ruined a good pair of pants. After I was off work, I went home and prepared
dinner. I then brought it up to the Special Event Center for Gary, Pat and I to
eat there. Then at 6 o’clock we went to
the genealogy library and stayed until 10 doing research. After that we went to
Ding Ho on Broadway and had Chinese food. Gary treated Pat and I. I really
enjoyed tonight and enjoy Pat and Gary’s company. It was another hot day 105
degrees. I stayed up rather than going to bed and watched the Philadelphia
Story with Katherine Hepburn and Cary Grant in it. I cleaned the kitchen while watching the show
as I had seen it so many times before.
4 August 1979 Saturday
Mike Allred never came down
today as I had hoped. I don’t know why. Perhaps it was better he didn’t. I spent the day scrubbing and cleaning the
house. I brought a vacuum cleaner and mop bucket home from work. It took all
day. In the evening I did up the laundry at the laundry mat. That took a long
time also. Around 9:30 I went bike riding for the first time with my new bike.
I actually tumbled off of it not being used to the rakes. Then I rode over to Sugar House Park where I tried to get
used to the gears by riding around the circle.
I went to bed rather late.
I visited with Fran on the
phone today. I guess the wedding went
well yesterday and Fran danced with her aunt Edna during the polka. She said
she’s coming home this Tuesday at 4:20 according to the bus schedule. I watched
an episode of I Claudius. Yesterday it was 109 degrees but today it was just
over 100. I started reading Gone With the Wind again.
Back to work and I really
didn’t do much and just cleaned my area. I woke up with the worse headache. It
was so hot last night in the high 70’s so I couldn’t sleep any. It’s 103
degrees today. All month it’s been hot hot hot with no fans to really try to
cool things off. I wrote a little tonight and went to bed around 7 as I was
trying to get some sleep to end my headache. There’s nothing in the news. I
called Fran and she said she should be back in Salt Lake City tomorrow at 4:30.
She is flying Western Airlines out of Minneapolis. Paulette Gasparac called to
see if she was home yet.
Fran came home finally today. I went to work and only worked until
3:45 so I could pick Fran up at the airport at 4:20. She looked so pretty and I
am glad to have her back home. I missed
her so much. I took her out to dinner at Ding Ho where I had fried rice and
sweet and sour spareribs.
Afterwards we came home and she
called her mom to let her know she arrived safely. Sam didn’t recognize her at first
then after smelling her went crazy.
Later we went to the Tower Theater and saw Superman again. At night after the
show it had rained some which helped cool things off. We went to bed around 10
but it was closer to 11 before we went sleep from talking so much.
I am glad to have Fran home again
as it was so lonesome here by myself. I
was so tired this morning as I was up
and down last night. I finally was up at 6 to get ready to go into work. Cliff
Garland didn’t come to work today and Dean Guthrie was really angry as he was
supposed to help us paint the football field at Rice Stadium. So Dean, Pat
Winter, Jed Hansen, Rand Hendricksen and I had to do it all. It wasn’t very hot
today only around 90 and we had cloud cover also. Gary Ratliff didn’t come into
work today also so this evening I called him to see if he was sick. He said he
just took the day off to go through the temple with Gabby. That was neat to
hear. In the news there’s a major oil spill in Texas.
I worked mainly with Gary
Ratliff today as we carefully sealed the basketball court with a new coat of
varnish. All of the crew had to be there in a line to make sure it was coated
evenly. I hear that on September 3,
Wayland Jennings will be herein concert. My Family knew his family back in
Texas. The day went okay and Dean
Guthrie said some weird things about work but I think it was just a power trip
on his part. Afterwork in the late afternoon
Fran and I went to K-Mart and bought $38 worth of material so Fran could make some more dresses for herself. I mailed off some genealogy to Mom’s cousin
Audie Smith tonight. Then we watched some Carol Burnett Show reruns, the Gong
Show, I love Lucy, Laverne and Shirley, and Angie. I guess I will have to work
late tomorrow night for a Football game at Rice Stadium. I don’t think Dean
actually wanted me to but Gary did. It will be just Gary, Dean and me. For
dinner Fran fixed potato soup, BLT sandwiches and we had ice cream. It’s still rather hot out but is cooling off.
Ten years ago Sharon Tate was murdered by Charles Manson’s so called family of
hippies.
10 August 1979 Friday
It was a long day as I worked
from 7 this morning until midnight. From 7 to 4 were my regular hours but from
4 to 12 I worked overtime at the
Utah-Arizona High School All Star Game. I thought Gary was going to work but Rand
Hendrickson took his place. So it was just Dean, Rand and me. Dean had me guard
the entrance to the visitor team’s locker room as it has no door to keep people
away that didn’t belong there. Hopefully
I will be paid in cash for the overtime. There’s something going on about Cliff I could
tell between Dean and Gary. Cliff is taking his vacation next week. One of the
stupid coaches walked on the basketball court
that we had just finished sealing.
It made Gary so angry. Monday is his
wife’s Gabby’s birthday so I told Gary if he will buy the silk flowers I would
make her an arrangement tomorrow. It rained some this morning but it was hot
for much of the rest of the day. I was paid today $245 plus $25 that Jeff
Chapman borrowed from me.

The visitor team’s locker
room had no door and you could see right
into the changing lockers and the showers. Someone was tasked always with
guarding the door during games and I usually volunteered because I didn’t care
a bit about the game but enjoyed having to guard the naked boys as they changed
and showered.
Fran cleaned the duplex this morning while I went with Gary Ratliff to Brown’s
Floral to buy some silk flowers for
Gabby’s birthday this Monday. She likes blue so bought blues and browns. When I
came home I arranged them in the afternoon. Later Fran and I went shopping at
Dan’s Market and bought $70 worth of groceries, primarily fresh fruits and
vegetables and things we could
freeze. In the evening we went to the
Tower Theater to see North Avenue Regulars which we didn’t like so we didn’t stay for all of it but came home
and I worked on genealogy.
Fran fixed a pork pot roast for Sunday dinner with fried Okra,
black eyed peas, corn bread, corn on the
cob mashed potatoes and gravy. We hadn’t eaten this well in a long time. Ww
watched PBS mostly, King Henry VIII, Upstairs, Downstairs, and I Claudius. It
rained off and on all day and at times quiet heavily at night. We didn’t make it to church this Sunay. We
got to get going again even if the ward is weird and very cliquish. Our phone bill from when Fran was in
Minnesota was a $105! Highest phone bill
I ever had. Ten years ago John
Cunningham was at the beach all the time or
driving down to San Diego to visit the zoo or se Old Town or the Spanish
missions along the way. I was also
getting information in the mail about registration for college at Cypress. It’s hard to believe
that was all just ten years ago.
I brought Gary’s flowers for
Gabby up to work today and he just went wild for them. He showed them off to Brian
Nelson and Ted Jacobsen some of the coaches . Tedd said “Ben’s really an artsy-crafty
little shit isn’t he.” I thought that was funny I guess today is Gabby’s 28th
birthday. In such a short time I will be 30 years old. Do I really want to be
doing what I’m doing now when I’m
40? No I don’t think so. I want to go
back to school and get an elementary education degree.
I didn’t do much at work today.
I did run into Don and Ralph this
morning while cleaning the ticket office.
They’re a Gay couple that Fran and I know. Fran invited them over for a chicken dinner tonight so we spent the evening with them with
Fran doing most of the visiting and staying up with them after I said I had to
go to bed at 9 to get enough sleep for tomorrow. After they left we received a
phone call at 10 from Steve Madsen saying Meg was going into labor so Fran left and went
to Cottonwood hospital to get little Stephen
and Hillary to come spend the night with
us. Also Linda Suazo called to say the Lionel’s ex-wife Hilda and mother of
Kitty and Peter committed suicide. In the news the space shuttle Enterprise flew over Salt Lake today and that
was kind of fun to see.
Additional Material
This was the first time I
mentioned the word “Gay” in any of my journals after marrying. I don’t recall
at all who these guys were and how we knew them. Fran had a Gay friend named
Michael right before she met me.
Meg Maden had a little boy this morning at 3
am that they are going to name Nathan
Andrew Madsen. Fran took care of Stephen, Hillary and Amanda while Meg was at
the hospital. After work today I went to a doctor’s appointment at FHP. This
doctor said not to bother about my hand that he said it really didn’t need surgery.
Today Steve Madsen came at 11 tonight to
retrieve his kids. I guess Fran is going down to Provo this Friday to help out.
It rained off and on all day and it felt like fall was in the air.
I just worked my regular shift but we were
washing the SEC windows. I worked with Jed Hansen We had a good talk about human
sexuality while working. I spent some
time also with Gary Ratliff and Dean Guthrie and I thought Gary was going to
have in ulcer when I told him I needed
some time off next Tuesday to see a counselor
about getting an elementary teaching
degree. He thought I was going to quit or something and he was trying to me out of it. I think he wants me working
with him forever. He said I was the only one he really could talk to. That made
me feel secure in my job. Fran did the washing
today after I came home for lunch. I am going to try and get back into
school this fall and try to get a certificate in Elementary education. The weather was pretty today and still feels
like fall is in the air,
Gary Ratliff is going on vacation all next
week. I didn’t do much just my regular assignments. The part time kids will go back to being
simply part time once school starts back up again. Gary is really pissed off with Kay Wiker and Jeff Chapman. Kay made
an illegal left hand turn while driving the state truck and people were calling
Gary and giving him flack about it. Cliff wasn’t in today as he is still on
vacation. I haven’t missed him any either.
I sent the day down in Provo after going to
the genealogical library this morning with Gary Ratliff and Pat Winter. I think
we found Gary’s elusive ancestor William Gray in the census records. I had left my film reader to go get some more
films and when I returned the microfilm location had moved. I asked Gary if
he changed my micro film and he said he
hadn’t touched it. However the film had been turned backward to an Ephraim Gray
who from examining the records he appears to be William Gray’s brother. Gary
and I both got goose bumps over that. Afterwards I went down to Provo
around 4 and went up to Sundance where
Steve was in charge of his ward’s picnic to help him. I forgot how unfriendly Utah County Wards are to strangers so I left
and went back to Provo to be with Fran
who was watching the kids.
I slept in until 9 today and
nobody went to church as we were all just too tired and really need a rest. Since Steve and Meg were low on
groceries we went to Albertson’s and bought enough groceries to fix a really nice breakfast. We stayed in Provo until about 6 before returning home where we watched
an episode of I Claudius before going to bed.
At worked I continued washing SEC
windows and cleaning with the part time kids at Rice Stadium. Today is Jed
Hansen’s last day of full time as he will go on part time tomorrow. Gary has
taken a couple of days off so he won’t be back in until Thursday, I guess. It
rained all last night long and some today.
After work I went to the credit union and withdrew $185 and deposited
$170 of it as Commercial Security. Then I bought some groceries and spent $8 on
gas. Unleaded is 94 cents now per gallon. In the news President carter is
taking a trip down the Mississippi River to escape the flack he is getting in
Washington over the firing of Andrew Young the black ambassador to the U.N and
all the cabinet shakeup he’s been doing. I
talked to Fran who is still staying down in Provo as she said Meg Madsen
is still weak from childbirth. I called Mom to talk and she said my cousin
Stephanie had a tumor on her uterus.
21 August 1979 Tuesday
Cliff Garland didn’t come into
work today and Dean Guthrie had a dentist appointment until ten this morning so
I was in the building by myself for a while as everyone else was down at Rice Stadium. Brian Nelson, Gary’s
boss called and said some really
encouraging words to me. He said he liked my work and how well I had carried
off graduation. I went to see a counselor about what it takes to get an
elementary certificate and it was kind of discouraging because there aren’t any
night time classes and they won’t wave my student teaching for the time I spent at Central Elementary in Tooele. In the evening
Aunt Minnie called to say she wants to come to Utah this fall so I guess I will
start planning for that. I called Fran who is still in Provo still but I will
bring her home tomorrow. It was a pretty day out today as I think our summer
heat is over.
22 August 1979 Wednesday
I am kind of tired from
working 7 to 4 today. Gary Ratliff called me to say the Dean Guthrie is going to
switch the areas Cliff Garland and I clean.
After work I drove down to Provo to bring Fran home. I visited with
Steven and Meg for a while and we didn’t get home to Salt Lake until 9:30 and
we just climbed into bed when Dean Guthrie called and said for me to go into work to check for
leaks that had been reported. Gary gave us 5 hours of overtime and I didn’t get
back to bed until 12:30
23 September 1979 Thursday
I worked from 7 to 5 helping paint the Utes logo on the Astro Turf down at the Ride Stadium.
Then tonight after taking Sam for a long walk I finally got to bed at 9. Pat
Winter is upset with Dean Guthrie because Dean won’t listen to any of Pat’s
gripes. I will be glad when Gary returns. I miss his company. Fran wanted to go
out to a show but I was too tired.
Pompeii was destroy 1900 years
ago. I worked with Dan Guthrie, Kay Wiker, and Pat Winter painting the
astro-turf down at the Ric Stadium. It was a long day from 7 to 6 with two
hours of overtime. I was so tired when I came home, so Fran and I just stayed
home. I didn’t even take Sam out for his long walks. I heard from Mom that my
cousin Stephanie might have cancer. I certainly hope not. We ordered a
pizza for dinner as we were too tired to cook and Fran is working on another
dress.
25 September 1979 Saturday
Today is Pat Winter’s 30th
birthday. I had to go into work today for 6 hours of overtime. I didn’t have to
do much but be down at Rice Stadium to clean up after a football game. Hardly
any one came to it. Kay Wiker hurt himself right before noon when he got hit in
the head so I sent him home and cleaned up by myself mainly the locker rooms.
In the evening Fran and I went down to Provo to fix them diner, We had Mexican
food. Steve talked some about our bankruptcy procedure
and he thinks we will be able to keep Murry Van Wagon’s piano. They
wanted us just to spend the night but Fran wanted to go home to attend church
tomorrow.
I had a surprise today when my
cousin Francis Ann and her husband Eddie Griess dropped by to see us on their
way to Yellowstone Park. She said she told mom to tell us they were coming but
mom must have forgotten. So we missed Sunday School because they changed the
meeting time on us. When we came home from Sacrament Francis Ann and Eddie were
waiting on us and Fran fixed a good spaghetti dinner .We talked for a while
before taking them down to Temple Square. They weren’t impressed as they were too
much Church of Christ. In the evening I called Gary Ratliff and said I wouldn’t
becoming in tomorrow. Francis Ann and I talked a lot about family. I couldn’t
get over how big Ricky has grown as well
as Alessa and Steven also.
27 August 1979 Monday
I was up at 8:30 and started
fixing French Toast for breakfast for Frances Ann, Eddie and the kids. Afte r
everyone ate and got cleaned up we drove out through Emigration Canyon over to
Heber then back down through Provo Canyon where we stopped to have a picnic. It
sure was a pretty scenic drive. The
scrub oaks were just beginning to turn colors. We watched some kids jumping off
the bridge into the Proo River. I also saw them smoking marijuana so they must
have been stoned.. after eating and resting a bit we drove up to American Fork
Canyon to see Timpanogos cave but it was closed by th e time we arrived so we
just drove back to Slat Lake. I was tired and had a head ache from all the
driving. Ut it was time to spend some time with my cousin’s family and getting
to know then better. While here, Eddie fixed the hot water faucet from dripping
and that was great of him. We played card
games before going to bed around 9 as I was tired, I really like Francis
Ann a lot but I know she isn’t very affectionate which is a definite Williams
trait.
I went back to work today. Gary Ratliff left
early after complaining about pains in his chest. I called him later and he said
the doctors said he had a blot clot. I had spent the day with him and Dean
Guthrie picking up supplies in Midvale using the work truck. In the evening Fran and I went out to dinner at the New South
Seas Chinese restaurant. It wasn’t very good. Then we went to show to see George Hamilton in “love at First
Bite’ a comic vampire movie at the
Glendale theater for 75 cents. We really like it although Fran and I got into a
quarrel because of her being rude to a
clerk. It spoiled part of the movie for
me until we made up. Francis Ann and Eddie
left this morning at 11:30
29 August 1979 Wednesday
I worked today until 4 but
didn’t go home until 6. I worked in the concourse, buffeting and waxing the
floor. Kay Wiker bought a new car, a LaBaron, boy is that dumb. Gary is sick
with chest pains again. I saw him very
little today and I am worried about him. Murray Van Wagoner died of blood clots.
JR Peacock called tonight and wanted us to come
out this Sunda to meet his mother who his visiting from California>
said we would. The leaves are beginning to change colors and there’s a fall
haziness over the mountains. We had a rice and hamburger casserole for dinner. I made a cheesecake for tomorrow
Gary Ratliff made me responsible for cleaning the coaches’
offices in the morning, He’s changing around our routine some. Gary does not look well and is still having chest
pains. Dean Guthrie took the day off and the rest of the crew was down at the
stadium cleaning the VIP box there. I talked to Gary and his new secretary Kelley Carlson about cleaning supplies in the afternoon. I mainly worked in the concourse,
cleaning and polishing all the drinking
fountains. At home Fran fixed a guacamole salad and baked chicken for supper.
Pat Winter dropped by the duplex for a while
to relate that he thought that Dean Guthrie had ab ego problem and won’t
listen to anyone. Fran has been making a
pretty dress,

It’s the last day of the month
and I worked until 5. I felt kind of bad today like I was left out of things at
work. I worked by myself in the concourse for most of the day. I didn’t see anyone
until the afternoon. Gary Ratliff asked me if I was mad at him and I said I
wasn’t at all. He said he thought I was because I don’t drop by the office
much anymore to visit. I guess I better start again. Gary’s not well
and said he passed out and heard voices saying
“Has he come? Can you see him? Mom called this evening and said that my
uncle J.W. Johnson’s crop was hailed out.
1 September 1979 Saturday
I went into work at 8 this
morning and worked until 12:30 in the
morning. Gary Ratliff didn’t come in until almost noon because he had his hair
permed. We worked on building the stage
until 2:30 and then went down to Rice Stadium to get it ready for the football
game tonight. Dean Guthrie, Gary and I worked the south end, while Jed and Pat
worked the north end. Cliff worked the VIP box by himself. Dean, Cliff, and
Gary got into a quarrel nut I think they worked it out. Pat how ever lost his
keys after work> had a depressed feeling today . I think it’s because of
Gary’s illness and Dean being weird towards me.
I slept in until 9:30, then
was up to go to Fast and Testimony meeting in
the 2nd Wasatch Ward. Fran bore her testimony. After church
we went to South Kordan to visit with J.R. Peacock and see his mother Eller
Peacock. We had dinner out there.
Afterwards we went back into town over to see Gary and Gabby Ratliff but they
weren’t home/ So we came home and watched dome TV. We had an avocado salad for
dinner.
I worked from 8 this
morning until 3 in the morning. Waylon
Jennings entourage trucks came in around
11 to set up for the concert. It took until around 2 to bring in all the sound
equipment from unloading the trucks with the roadies. Gary Ratliff, however,
made it fairly easy for me and we had lots of extra help also. The concert didn’t actually start until 8
this evening. I didn’t think Waylon Jennings was all that good as I liked the Crickets better who were Buddy
Holly’s old group. I did visit with Waylon’s son Buddy because he’s from
Littlefield, Texas. I told him how my RL dated his aunt back in the 1940’s and
how my Grandpa Johnson bought his farm from his grandpa. The show lasted until around 10:30 and
someone set off the fire alarm. Thank goodness it didn’t develop into any
emergency. Fran attended the concert
with Paulette Gasparac.
I
went into work at 7 and worked until 7 at night another long day. Boy was I
tired. This morning when I went to the office, I felt like Gary didn’t want me
there so I really felt left out. I went to work in the concourse and had little
to do with anyone else for the rest of the day. I mopped the entire concourse
almost entirely by myself. Gary went to the doctor’s today because of severe
pains he’s been having in his chest. After coming home from work, I took a
little nap then watched just Happy Days
before going to bed. Fran made some curtains for the kitchen that were real
cute.
I worked from 7-4 but stayed
until 5 because I took Gary home because we didn’t think he was well enough to
ride his motor bike home. This morning we talked about some of the
misunderstanding between him and me. I felt like I was being pushed out of the
office and generally unwanted there. He said I was wrong and he needed me there
more now than ever with the stress he is under. Pat and I went out to lunch
together at Taco Bell. I told him to stop being a servant Gary and Dean all the time. Taking Gary home I found
out that he thinks his job is in jeopardy. In the evening Fran and I went to visit
with Gary and Gabby until about 9.
Worked the same as yesterday and also stayed
until 5. This morning Gary was really sick so Pat Winter and I gave him a priesthood
blessing. The stress he’s under sure ties him up in knots/ For lunch Kelley,
Dean, Pat, Kay Gary and I went to
Sizzlers for lunch. It was nice to get
away from work. I finished mopping the entire concourse and helped Dean set up
for the Women’s Volleyball. I was in the office a lot today. Gary is afraid
that His boss Brian might find out that he is sick. I saw some personality
conflicts between Gary’s secretary Key and Dean Guthrie today. Fran fixed a
roast pork for dinner.
7 September 1979 Friday
I worked until 4 but this
evening at 8 I went with Gary, Dean, and Kelley Carlson to Centerville to drop off a heavy bookcase for her. Kelley gave me a bushel of tomatoes so tomorrow I will go over to Gary’s to can
tomatoes. Gary had a bad attack at work and I helped him from blacking out. Pat
Winter came over to the duplex for dinner tonight and stayed until 9. I was
paid today but only cleared about $$247 and $200 of it went to rent. We are out
of funds again.
I spent much of the day with
Gary and Gabby Ratliff. I slept in until 9 this morning . After I was cleaned
up, Fran went with Sandy to Pikette’s to buy material while I went to the store
to buy some celery, peppers, and onions for making chili out of the
tomatoes. I went over to Gar’s at 1 and there we cored and peeled
the tomatoes. I made relish out of some of it and bottled whole tomatoes out of
the rest. I stayed over there until 8. I
ate pizza and bought some ]e mixes to make Sunrise drinks. It was a pretty day.
I listened to Carmen on the radio. In the news President Carter says not to worry about Russian Troops in Cuba. Ted Kennedy sounds like he’s going to run for President
against Carter. Gary had another attack today. Fran was able to witness for
herself how bad the really are/. We
talked about the drama going on don at work also for a while.
9 September 1979 Sunday
I was up at 7 to attend Priesthood at 8. I had
to introduce myself and I hate that. The
lesson as on the scattering and gathering of Israel. Told them that only had 10 sons and adopted
Ephraim and Manasses. They didn’t believe me.
I went to Sunday School and the lesson was on Zion’s Camp, Joseph
Smith’s army. I didn’t go to Sacrament meeting because Meg Madsen came up from Provo with Nathan. She said she needed
to get away. She stayed until 6 and we had a good visit. She is frustrated with Steve again. My aunt and uncle J.W. and Pauline dropped
by yesterday while we weren’t home so we missed them. They never let us know they
were going up to Yellowstone. We had
spaghetti for dinner as there is not much to eat in the house but that’s too
bad I guess. We need to lose some weight anyway I weigh 215 lbs./ I hate to
even admit it. I can’t think of anything new to write about. Aunt Minnie called
and said she is planning on coming up to Salt Lake this October
10 September 1979 Monday
Gary Ratliff was so sick this
morning that Pat and I gave him another blessing. Between the painkiller pills valium
and blood thinners, Gary is really doped up. He fears he might be having a
nervous breakdown so he calls me in to talk and listen to the problems he’s
having. Evidently he’s worried over his job and the stress is so intense that it’s almost like a heart attack. The
Athletic Department headed by Arnie Ferrin is out to get Gart because he
wouldn’t give in to them and use his budget to help finance Athletic programs.
Arnie has absolutely nothing to do with Gary anymore and is trying to get him
fired. Fortunately Arnie has no direct authority over Gary but he has more
direct access to Vice President Snow who Arnie could put pressure on Snow to fire
Gary if he wanted to. However Gary’s immediate
bosses are very supportive of Gary.
We got our new shirts today with the SEC
logo on them today all but the green
ones. I had my official job evaluation with Gary and Dean today. I told them
that I needed more interpersonal communication to make my job more meaningful.
More importantly, Dean and I had a good long talk and I told him I was not out
to get his job but I feel that I could ne be of better service of my abilities
were utilized. Gary said as soon as my probation is up he’s going to give me a
6 percent raise. That would bring me up to almost $4.00 an hour. That would be
really nice. Gary had another mild heart attack this afternoon and I helped him
from blacking out. Now that Kelley’s gone for a couple of weeks with her sorority, I’m in the office more.
Gary has given me a walkie talkie so he can call me when he’s not feeling well.
I told Gary and Dean that I need all the overtime I can get, because I am quickly going into the poor house.
Tonight I worked from 7-9 turning on and off the stadium lights.
12 September 1979 Wednesday
It was a long, long day as I
worked from 7 in the morning until midnight encase of the Junior Varsity
Football game. Utah played Dixie College. At the football game Dean Guthrie got
into a fight with a drunken kid from Dixie and had his new shirt ripped off
him. His brand new shirt. We just were our brand new shirts today. Gary was so
mad and angry at the Athletic Department for not providing any security . Kay
Wiker also worked tonight keeping score
up in the press box. I guess there will be some changes made how the Athletic
Department interacts with the set up and
maintenance crew from now on. Ted
Jacobsen, Ned Alger and Gary are supposed to have a meeting every Monday to
co-ordinate events. No longer can the individual coaches schedule anything
without going first through Ned who will
get together with Gary on it. For lunch this afternoon Dean Guthrie his
sister Brenda, Gat and I went to Wendy’s for hamburgers. Pat Winter was upset
that he wasn’t asked to come along. I felt bad for him also. Gay’s drinking set-ups at work a lot now.
Mostly fruit juices mixed with grenadine. They’re kind of fun. I have a much
better relationship with Dean after
our talk. He depends on me to take care
of Gary. We had to use ammonia to keep
him from passing out. Terrible. My 1st
cousin 1st removed Audi e Smith sent a letter with Grandma’s sister
Aunt Bertha’s life story. She also sent $10 which sure will help. Brighton Bank
keeps calling me at work even after I’ve told them stop it as harassment. Fran
is finally looking for work now.
13 September 1979 Thursday
I stayed an hour after work to
5 to take Gary Ratliff home. Dean picks him up and I take him home as he is hesitant
to drive as he might pass out. He had a bad heart attack today. I sort of hypnotized
him really with the power of suggestion to control his breathing> was very
surprised by that as I was just trying to get him to relax.. I washed the entrance
windows today but that was about all I did except to be with Dean Guthrie and
Gary, After taking Gary home, I borrowed $50 from him to help us make it to the
next payday. It was funny at work that Gay Kay Wiker, Dean and I all wore
our yellow shirts by coincidence. I went
to Brown Floral after taking Gary home to pick out some silk flowers to make an arrangement for Kelley Carlson, Gary’s secretary.
I bought enough to make a bouquet also for Gabby. Mainly yellow flowers . The miniseries
Holocaust ended tonight.
14 September 1979 Friday
It was chilly and windy this
morning when I went into work. I had to wear a light jacket as I suppose Fall
is in the air. Fran was called in to substitute teach today for a half day. In the morning I worked
with Kay Wiker loading the cattle truck with equipment for the antique car show
this Sunday. I brought up the flower arrangement that Gary had me make for
Kelley and also the one I made for Gabby. Gary’s has been on valium and pain
pills for most of the day and still had an attack around 2 but not as bad a yesterday. Cliff Garland is
really being an Asshole again. He’s growling because I’m in Gary’s office . I
am so sick of his old maid attitude.
Gary has it now that the individual coaches have to goo through Ned to request the SEC
crew to do work for them. I had a pretty good day although I didn’t do much but
still I am really tired. I hear the smog is really Abd in Southern California
and only hurricanes are in the news.
I went up to the SEC toddy to
type most of the day while Fran ran around with Paulette Gasparac. Steve and
Meg dropped by while I was at work. Fran came and picked me up at 5 . She said
she wants to get a job as sheet mental worker. I don’t think so. Sometimes she’s
so delusional. We went to the show in
the evening to the Tower and saw Grease and Saturday Night Fever. We didn’t
stay for all of Saturday Night Fever as we have to get up early tomorrow.
16 September 1979 Sunday
We didn’t go to church because I had to work
the Antique Car show all day from 7 to 7. I made $59 working it. Gary Ratliff
came but Dean Guthrie and I worked it
mostly. It was a hot, hot day ad I got sunburned sitting out in the sin. All in
all I had a fun day being with Dean and Gary.
17 September 1979 Monday
I worked my regular shift and
the another 4 hours turning on and off the stadium lights for the football team’s
practice. I didn’t have to do a lot of
work. Fran called and said she was hired at Tampico. I guess she will start tomorrow.
I didn’t eat any lunch today as I didn’t have any money to spend. The weather
is getting cooler. I didn’t get to bed until 10:30
18 September 1979 Tuesday
I worked my regular shift but at 6:30 went
back to turn the stadium lights on fro football practice. I was paid for 3
hours. At work I spent most of the time in the office with Dean Guthrie
building a box to hold the ropes for the stadium/ Gary slept for most of the day
from the new dugs he is taking. Fran went back to work at La Paloma instead of
Tampico and will start tomorrow. She quit
after one day saying she didn’t like the people there. Aunt Minnie called
and said she is flying up the 13 of October. I saw Pat Winter at the stadium
hanging around. The nights ae getting cooler.
19 September 1979 Wednesday.
Today is Grandpa Johnson’s 78th
birthday. From what I gather Mom and Dad should be back in Texas now to be
there for it. Fran started her new job at LA Paloma making $25 a day and is
paid daily in cash by Tomie Martinez under the table. At work I opened my big
mouth and told Kay Wiker that I better not be typing anymore or Cliff Garland will get bent out of shape. I didn’t know he was standing right behind
me. For lunch I went out to Perkins with Gary and Dean. While I was at
work I buffed and waxed the concourse. I
also checked all the lights in the arena and helped Dean put the walkie talkie charger up on the wall. During my breaks I
still typed up the Fenter and McLeod family
histories. Gary had another attack after coming back from lunch. We think it
was a blood clot. I took him home after five
then went and picked Fran up from La Paloma. In th evening we watched the
movie Real People.
20 September 1979 Thursday
Worked my shift but stayed to 5 to take Gary
home as usual. My beard is about 3 weeks old now. I am growing it back finally. Kay Wiker, Dean Guthrie and I went up to the “cloud”
in the city of the arena to change out the lights. I heard that when the arena was
being built a man fell to his death from up there. Gary had another attack around 3 and it hurts
see him hurt so much. Fran worked at La Paloma again today. She said she wants
to substitute teach again because they
are calling her back. I don’t think she knows what she wants. I am still typing
up the Fenter family history and also reading
Gone With the Wind again.
21 September 1979 Friday
There was an explosion over at
the Huddle in the Union parking lot when an underground steam pipe blew up , around 3:30 The Athletic department
flew a man from Monsanto to rip Gary
about the job we did on the astro turf last summer however the guy said that Gary did
such an excellent job that they even offered Gary a job. Boy was the Athletic
department standing with egg of their face. This evening Fran went show with
her girlfriend Shannan while I stayed

22 September 1979 Saturday
23 September 1979 Sunday
We went to church today
to all our meetings and afterwards went down to Provo and spent the
evening with Steven and Meg Madsen. We had dinner with them and a good time
24 September 1979 Monday
Fran took Sam to obedient school . This German named Inge is
his teacher. “You vill be a goot dogk Scham” she said . Sam is terrified.
25 September 1979 Tuesday
I did up our wash today. Fra
is back working at La Paloma full time which makes for daily spending money for
us which helps out.
26 September 1979 Wednesday
Came home from work and the electricity
had been turned off. We lighted candles and oil lamps. We went to the show rather than be home in the dark. We went to
Trolle’s Corers and saw “Hair”. It made
me long for the sixties. I am so glad I grew up then.
27 September 1979 Thursday
I worked my regular shift but
stayed to 5 to take Gary home. When I came back I went to La Paloma for a chili
verde burrito dinner.
Again I took Gary Ratliff home after work after having a really exhausting day. I had to take Gary the doctors at 3:30 because of a reaction to the medicine he was taking. He’s been so depressed from being released from his Stake’s Quorum of Seventies Presidency. Fran and I are taking a disco dancing class
29 September 1970 Saturday
I picked up Gary at 1:30 to be
at work at 2:00 and worked all day until 1 in the morning with the football game
that Utah played against Utah State and
lost. It was really crowded at Rice Stadium with around 31,000 fans. However it
was a nice night out. I took Gary home afterwards so it was 2 in the morning when
I finally went to bed. Fran worked at La
Paloma until 4 in the morning. I started
wearing contact lenses again.
It’s the last day of September
and fall still isn’t here completely. I’m sick today. I have a fierce headache
and fell achy all over. I didn’t go to church today and Fran and I were both exhausted from working so late yesterday. We
didn’t get a chance to get dog food for Sam yesterday so had to go to the store
today. We watched TV and went up tie university. The weather is beautiful 75
degrees. In the News the Pope went to Ireland.
