warehouse for Coors Beer. I have worked about 22 hours a week ever since. I
also go to Cypress Community College and earning credit towards eventually a
teaching degree in history. I am a member of the Church of Christ, and my

Shop in Stanton. We live in a comfortable nine room one car garage home at
11562 Dale Street, Garden Grove. It is a tract home that my parents purchased
new in November of 1953. I spent the entire memory of my childhood in this
residence. The home is 10 miles from Huntington Beach, five miles from
Disneyland and 3 miles from Knotts Berry Farm.
The names of my friends
that most often will reoccur in this diary are Jerry Lee Smith born April 10,
1951, Ralph Albert Ludders and his wife Brenda born January 11, 1951 and
February 22, 1953, John Francis Cunningham born January 9, 1951, Karen Gramsted
born June 13, 1951 and her brother Jim 2 years younger, my cousin Larry Paul
Fagen born January 23 1954, Pam Ludders 17 years old, Ralph’s sister, Mr.
Thomas V Reeve my history instructor at Cypress. If any more names come up,
they will most likely be new acquaintances.
JANUARY
1 January 1971 Friday
I woke at 9 a.m. and began to get ready for
going to work at 11 . Mom and Dad were watching the 82nd Tournament
of Roses on TV . I worked at Taco Bell today from 11 to 5, first with Violet,
the day time assistant manager, than with Karen Gramsted, her brother Jim, and
Dave Bark. Karen and Jim live close by at 809 Winchester in Anaheim and their
father is an insurance agent for the parents of Karen Carpenter of the
Carpenters. Jim Gramsted was all excited about the Rose Bowl game which
Stamford won over Ohio. Today was pretty, fairly warm and a pleasant 70
degrees. I rode my bike home from work and after resting decided to go out
again for a ride. I rode my ten speed up to my sister and brother-in-law
Charline and Dennis Wachs to see my nephew, James. They were not home so I rode
around Disneyland and that vicinity until about 8 at night where then decided
to come back home . It is a distance of five miles from the house to Disneyland.
Halfway home my rear brake began to drag,
and it was hard peddling . When I reached home, I had an offer from Ralph and
Brenda Ludders , my close friends to go to the show with them and Ralph’s
sister Pam whom I dated before. It was 8:30 before we were able to get off and
foggy conditions made us change the show we originally wanted to see . We ended
up going to the Anaheim Drive In to see “Catch-22” and “the Adventurers. It
cost $2 each to get into the show. We didn’t get out of the Drive-In until late
and I was home at 3:30 in the morning.
2 January 1971 Saturday
I woke up at 9 but didn’t get out of bed until noon.
I was just so plain tired from
yesterday. I rode over 30 miles yesterday on my bike. When I got up, I just read the
newspaper an watched TV until it was time for me to go to work. I started to
ride my bike, but it was just too cold and windy. I took Mom’s car to work and
there Larry Fagen, Jim Gramsted, and I got prepared for the evening rush.
Saturday and Friday are the big days at Taco Bell. Jim went home at 7:30 peeved
at Larry and I for criticizing him. He’s becoming a regular smart mouth. Larry
cleaned the walk in really well but other than that nothing spectacular happened. It was an ordinary
night at Taco Bell although slower than
usual. Ralph and Brenda Ludders came up to see me. He had to get his hair cut.
It was getting pretty shaggy. I got paid today and cleared $44.26. I only had
29 ½ hours on the time card . I make $1.60 . Larry and I talked about the
family history when it got really slow. While at work I went over to Taste
Freeze and got Larry and me some hot fudge sundaes. I closed early but we still
didn’t get out of there until 12:30. It is 1:30 now. The temperature today was
71 degrees.
3 January 1971 Sunday
I didn’t get up today
until 11 . when I did, I just read the Sunday Times newspaper until it was time
for me to going into work. There Larry Fagen came over this morning saying his Mom
Aunt Bonnie wanted my copy of the family history so she could copy it. At work
Jim and Karen Gramsted must have been mad at Larry and e as they did not speak much to us. I know Jim
is for sure. I worked with Larry today from 4 to 10 p.m. It was a slow night. I
guess the coolness kept people away. It was very windy and the temperature at
47 degrees. The high today was only 68 degrees. At work Larry was tired of
Mexican food so I ordered some Chinese food from Soo’s Kitchen which Larry went
to get. It was so good. Nobody came up to see us tonight. I rode my bike home
and it sure was cold with the wind coming out of the northeast. At home I typed
up my anthropology report which is due
tomorrow. I weigh 172 lbs. and lost 1 lb. Today is the last day of Christmas
vacation. I’m glad to be going back to school. The song that is number 1 out
here is “My Sweet Lord” by George Harrison.
4 January 1971 Monday
I was up at 7:30 to get ready to go back to
school after the Christmas break. I rode my bike ad it was very windy and cold.
60 degrees. My first class was Anthropology at 9. I have Mrs. Fouste for the
instructor. My next class was Asian Civilization at 10 with Mr. McLeod as the
instructor. He gave back the test we took before the Christmas break, and I got
an A minus on it. Donna got a B on hers. I didn’t have another class until noon, so I went to the library and read
some until then. At 12 I have my Anthropology lab which lasts until 3 in the
afternoon. In it we learned the makeup of eye coloring by studying the eyes of
our fellow class mates. I was voted as having the most beautiful eyes in class.
After class I rode home, and I received my rough draft of the cemetery report back through the mail which I had sent to Mr. Reeve. Around 4 I was so tired that I
went back to bed and slept until 8. I then got up and had some soup for supper.
I watched some television until 11 then did some homework. I hope it’s not as
cold tomorrow as it was today. In the news President Nixon was interviewed by
some newsmen and Governor Reagan was sworn in.
5 January 1971 Tuesday
I woke to a very cold morning. I had Donna take
me to school rather than ride my bike. At Cypress I saw frost on the grass. My
first class was California History with
Mr. Reeve . Ralph Ludders has the class with me. Afterwards I made an
appointment with Mr. Reeve to see him tomorrow during his office hours to
discuss my cemetery report. I had an hour break
until my next class, so Ralph took me home to retrieve my class schedule for registering that I had forgotten. After
my next class at noon, which was health, I spoke to John Cunningham whom I hadn’t seem all vacation long. He told
me that his parents were moving to northern Los Angeles in the summer. It was quite the surprise that unsettled me to say the least. I went to
my volleyball class at 1 and then registered for the Spring Semester at 3:15. I
was able to get all into all the classes I wanted but the procedure was slower this
time than last fall. Ralph Ludders rode me home and I just rested until it was
time to go to the Garden Grove Historical Society Meeting downtown. But first I went to Taco
Bell to pick up my good shoes I had left
there that I had changed out of. The meeting started at 7:30 and lasted until
10. It was mostly a business meeting dealing with purchasing the Stanley House
one of the original pioneer houses in Garden Grove. Mrs. Arthur Schnitger , a
kind old lady I met last November is dying
of cancer. I paid my dues to become a member of the society tonight. It was
only 47 degrees today and 28 degrees tonight. Brrr. Note-[Helen Schneider
1890-1971. Her husband was a pioneer of Garden Grove in the1900 census].
6 January 1971
Wednesday
Another cold, windy
day. After I got up, I went to Cypress with Donna however I didn’t go to my first class as I
had to meet with Mr. Reeve regarding my cemetery report. Afterwards I rewrote
my paper on the cemetery until John Cunningham got out of his anthropology lab.
We talked a while but was disappointed
when he said he could not go out with me to celebrate his upcoming birthday. I
gave him a birthday card and enclosed $5. I have the strangest feeling that
something is happening around me, something I have no control over. I feel sort
of helpless, like I will be entering a new phase of my life. When I came home, Mom
informed me that Leo Waldman had called and wanted me to come into work at
4:40. Before going in, I went to the store and bought John a birthday card. Dave
Bark and Karen Gramsted was working at Taco Bell when I arrived but left as
soon as Lorraine Stoffel, Leo’s step daughter came
in to work. I worked with her until we closed,
and I went home at 10:30. The high today was 60 degrees and right now it’s 38
degrees.
I didn’t see very many
people I knew today. Yesterday I forgot to mention that I received two books
from my book club, The French Lieutenant Woman and “Rome.” On KHJ Radio some of the top 10 songs this
week are 5th Dimensions One Less Bell to Answer, Dawn’s Knock Three
Times, Gladys Knights If I were Your Woman, # Dog Nights One Man Band, Led Zeppelin’s
The Immigrant Song, Barbra Streisand’s Stoney End, George Harrison’s My sweet
Lord, Wadsworth Mansion Sweet Mary, Lynn Anderson’s Rose Garden, Dave Edmond’s,
I Hear You Knocking, Ray Price’s For the Good Times, and Chairman of the
Board’s Pay to the Piper. I like 1900 Yesterday by the Orient Express.
7 January 1971 Thursday
I had made an appointment to meet with Mrs.
Marie L Hare the woman my old Junior High was named after. She lives in Westminster.
Marie Larter Hare [1885-1975] However I was late for the appointment but as is
turned out it didn’t matter as she
wasn’t there anyway because she was called away on an emergency. I then went to
Cypress and only missed Mr. Reeve’s California history class. I didn’t see John
Cunningham nor Ralph Ludders at school
either. In P.E., my team won and a lost a volleyball game. After I came home,
Charline called me to come over to look after my nephew James and I did until
around 4:30 as she had errands to do. Until Dad came home from work at 6, I didn’t do much just took a bath. At 6
, I then took Mom’s car up to Cypress , then I went over to Pam Ludder’s. there
I stayed until 11 at night. We talked and messed around for a while, then we
went to eh store and bought some popcorn and cokes. We have a date for tomorrow
to go see a show . After coming home, I
studied the Bible some and went to bed. The temperature is 38 degrees and was
58 degrees during the day. It was a pretty day, even if kind of cold. We got a letter from
J.W. and Pauline Johnson saying it’s 5 degrees in Littlefield, Texas.
Also,
today I talked to Brenda Ludders about giving Ralph aa surprise birthday party
on Monday.
In
the news San Francisco University ‘s Dr. Li discovered how to make a growth hormone.
[Dr. Choh Hao Li,
a University of California scientist had synthesized the human growth hormone]
I am still broken out in a rash for some
reason.
8 January 1971 Friday
I was up at 8 to get ready for school. Ralph
Ludders came by and took me. I went to both of classes and afterwards I went to
the library to begin to get my research paper together. I worked on it until 4
when Ralph came and picked me up to take me home. I saw John Cunningham
studying in the library and went up to him to say hi. He barely acknowledged
me. At home I worked some more on my paper until it was time to get ready to go
pick up Pam Ludders for our date. I still haven’t had time to fic my car ad had
to take Mom’s. We went to the Cinema West Theater in Westminster and saw Walt
Disney’s “Aristocats” and “Smith!” Smith was about an Indian boy accused of
murder featuring Glenn Ford. They were both good. Afterwards we went to Bob’s Restaurant
on Garden Grove Boulevard and ordered
some cokes and French fries . By the time I took Pam home it was I in the
morning. I really like Pam a lot. I hope to see more of her. At Pam’s house, I
called Brenda Ludders ad made plans for Ralph’s surprise birthday party this
Sunday. At home , James Clark was spending the night and he slept with Mom in
my bed, so I slept on the floor in the front room in front of the wall heater.
The cold front is still here . It was 57 degrees for the high today and it was
a very nice day.
9 January 1971 Saturday
Today is John F. Cunningham’s 20th
birthday. He was born in Glendale, California. I was up at 8 to get ready to
meet Pam Ludders over at her sister in law’s Brenda at 9 . I went with them, and
we ordered a cake for Ralph’s party tomorrow. Brenda bought tickets to
Disneyland for Ralph’s present. I am sure they will have fun. I had Pam and
Brenda drop me off at 11 as I just had to get cracking at the term paper on the
cemetery. I worked on it until when I had to go into work at 4:30. I worked
with my cousin Larry Fagen and Jim Gramsted
until 7:30 when Jim left. He’s
still mad about something. It was a pretty busy night until about 8 and then
for the rest of the night it was dead. Karen Gramsted came up to visit about 8:30
and stayed for two hours. We had nothing to do so we just goofed around,
chasing each other and other silly
things. At one point Karen put on my knit cap and combed her long hair down
over her face. A customer saw her, and
she was so embarrassed, but I thought it
was funny. I got even with Larry for smacking me with a wet rag by giving him a
drink filled with hot sauce. It was just a silly but fun night. I was home at
12:30. It was cool out today only 60 degrees. Mom is sick. She thinks she has a
cold.
10 January 1971 Sunday
I was up by 10:30 and began typing up my term
paper with the footnotes and biographies of the pioneers buried in the Magnolia
Cemetery. My nephew James Clark was over
today and wanted me to play with him, so
it was hard to get anything done. I didn’t get out of the house much today, but it seemed nice outside, 65 degrees and 47
degrees at night. At 4:30 I left the
house and went to pick up Pam Ludders to take her to get the surprised party ready
at his apartment. We had it nicely decorated, and the cake Brenda ordered was
huge. Other people there were Ken Beiter and his wife, add his friends Raymond
and his girlfriend were also invited. We hid in the dark and surprised Ralph
when he came in the door. The party was really nice, and we all had pleasant
conversations. Brenda had us play “Rook” an Hearts card games. Ralph received a lot of nice presents.
The party lasted from 7 in the evening until after 12:30. I then took Pam home
so she could get up to go to school tomorrow. In the news the U.S. apologized
for the bombing of the Russian Embassy. Those militant Jews just might start a
World War III if they don’t stop acting like fools. [Note-A small bomb exploded
outside a Soviet cultural building here before dawn, this morning, harming no
one but shattering the glass in several windows and hurling an iron gate to a
roof 250 feet away. The bombing, the latest in a recent series of attacks on
Soviet offices here and in New York, brought apologies from the State
Department and a strongly worded protest from the Soviet Embassy. United States,
relations With the Soviet Union have been aggravated recently by such attacks
and by other events, including demonstrations by American Jews to protest the
treatment of Jews in the Soviet Union, a Soviet threat to retaliate against
Americans in Russia, an American warning that the Soviet Government will be
held responsible for the safety of Americans there, and the harassment of
Americans on the streets of Moscow.]
11 January 1971 Monday
Today is Ralph A Ludders’ actual birthday. He’s
20 years old and born in Chicago, Illinois.
I didn’t wake up until around 11:30 this
morning . I didn’t go to school because I have my cemetery report to work on. I
cleaned up the kitchen and front room for Mom because I hate to work in a messy
atmosphere. Charline and Dennis Wachs came over
about 12:30 with James to call the doctors as t that James fell and cut
his forehead pretty badly. He’s always running into things. I hope he doesn’t
hurt himself seriously. At 1:30 I
finally began typing and I continued all night long , only stopping to eat. At
10 o’clock I stopped to watch the Carol Burnett Show because I needed a break.
Then continued to work on it throughout the night without going to bed. Leo
Waldman called today to tell me to work in Dave Bark’s place next week. In the news President Nixon lowered
the depreciation of used machinery interests rates to try and stimulate the economy.
It needs some. The weather is very crummy, overcast, and dreary looking. It was
58 degrees and looked like it might
rain.
12 January 1971
I finished typing at 6:30 this morning. I didn’t
want to go to bed because if I did, I would have never gotten up for school. I
called Ralph Ludders and had him take me to Cypress. I didn’t turn in my paper
after all because Mr. Reeve said he was going to keep them, and I wanted to make a photo copy to keep for
the historical society. After class Ralph ad I went to the Bernstein House
eatery to get something to eat. Then at noon I took my test in Health. It was
pretty hard as I didn’t even get a
chance to study for it. I didn’t have to go to P.E. as it was canceled because
it was raining . My sister Donna
took me home and after straightening up the house, I finally went to bed at
4:30 in the afternoon. It was a very tiresome day, overcast and misting, very
crummy weather at 60 degrees. It is supposed to rain for four days. I wish I
could find time and a good day to fix my car. The starter needs replacing. I
received a letter from Grandma Johnson in the mail. She said it’s very cold and
windy in Texas and minus 4 degrees. It
doesn’t seem possible that Grandma and Grandpa were just here last Christmas. I
jerked off two times today.
13 January 1971
Wednesday
I woke up at 7 and get ready for school. I went
with my sister Donna at 9 and she
received her class schedule for next term. I went to both my classes today and to the Wednesday Anthropology lab
to make up for missing it on Monday. In it we had to prick our fingers and by
using some of this solution find out
what blood type we were. Out of a class of 20 , 11 were type O, *type A and 1 Type B. There were no type of AB. I was
a type O and John Cunningham was the only B. We also worked out some genetic
problems which I had to help John with.
After the lab was over, I went home with Donna and cleaned the house. At 6 I
went back up to the college campus and tried to study some. I stayed until 9 when I came back home.
I read some more from my books I ordered from my book club before going to bed at
11. It was a rainy, overcast day, cool
but not unpleasant at 59 degrees. I went over to Ralph Ludders also today to
retrieve the Cemetery report I had Ralph photocopy where he works. I didn’t go over to Pam’s like
I wanted
14 January 1971
Thursday
I was up at 8 this morning and had my sister Donna take me to school
early so I could conference with Mrs. Mellom my guidance counselor on the
possibility of me adding a class to my schedule. She said I would have to
wait until the 16th of
February before I could change my schedule. I went to my California History
class and turned in my cemetery report . After class, Ralph Ludders and I went to
the Bernstein House to get something to
eat. I saw Donna there, so we sat with
her. Ralph left early and then a boy that Donna and I met last Tuesday came
over to the table to visit. His name is Ernest Pond. I didn’t go to my Health class,
but I did go to P.E. Very few people showed up to play volleyball. After
P.E. class , Donna took me home and there I had a letter from the Garden Grove
Historical Society in the mail. When Mom came home from grocery shopping at 4,
I borrowed her car and went down to Taco
Bell to see Karen Gramsted and my cousin Larry Fagen before going back up to
Cypress to study in the library. I worked on the Health Report I said I would
do for John Cunningham before I am coming home at 9”30. I sent the rest of the night
typing up the paper for him. I went to bed at 12:30. The weather is clear so no
more rain. It was 60 degrees. In the news California wants to have a lottery to
raise funds for education.
15 January 1971 Friday
I
was up at 8 again and rode to school with Donna. In Anthropology class, I gave
John Cunningham his Health Report That I
wrote for him. My next class was Asian Civilization in which I had a test . I
don’ think I did well on it. After it was over, Donna and I went to the
Bernstein House to get something to eat and there we saw Ernest Pond again, so
we went and sat at his table. We all sat and conversed about school and the war until 2 when Donna
had to go to her class So I then went to the Library when I did some research for
the Garden Grove Historical Society until Donna’s class was over and she could
take me home. When we got home at 4,
Karen Gramsted called and asked if I would come into work because Dave Bark was
sick. I was upset because I didn’t want to work tonight, but I came in anyway.
The night went pretty fast, and we weren’t very busy at all. I didn’t get home
until midnight and then did some typing before
I went to bed at 1:30. The weather was cool but 75 degrees. In the news the jurors
in the Tate -LA Bianca murder trial began to deliberate on a verdict on the Manson family.
16 January 1971
Saturday
Dad got me up at 8 this morning to take Donna
to work. I sure was tired. In the afternoon, Dad and I worked on getting a
starter put back in the Ford Galaxy and it runs now. I wrote a letter to Pamela
Husky back in Lubbock. Texas and one to Mr. Don Dobmeier of the Garden Grove Historical
Society today. I had to go into work at 4 and it was a pretty uneventful shift
until around 7:30 when I blew up at Jim Gramsted and we had it out about his
snide attitude and remarks. We later however apologized and became friends
again. I sure was grouchy all day because I woke up this morning with a bad sore
throat and at work, I had this headache. We
got paid today. I cleared $60. When I came home at midnight I went to bed. It
sure was a pretty day even if I am coming down with something. It was 82
degrees with pretty blue skies. Mom fixed fish for lunch, and I weigh 170 lbs.
so I got to lose weight. I hope I don’t wake up with another bad sore throat.
17 January 1971 Sunday’
I slept in until 11 because I was so tired.
When I did get up, all I did was read the Sunday L.A. Times all day except around
2 in the afternoon I rode my bike down to the Orange County Plaza where I
bought some tennis shoes. Mom had had bought me two pairs previously so now I
have three altogether. I went into work at 4 be] rode my bike because it was such a warm pretty day. I
couldn’t pass up riding my ten speed on a day like this. At work, I worked with
Larry Fagen until we closed at 10. The night was slow and unexciting. The same
as usual. I hope Leo Waldman sends us our W 2 forms before he leaves on his trip to Spain this
next Saturday. There is a good chance he
won’t. The Super Bowl Game was today between the Baltimore Colts and the Dallas
Cowboys. The Colts won 16 to 13 over the Cowboys. I didn’t watch any of the
game . The weather, as I said, was beautiful
and warm, almost hot at 85 degrees, The night was a warm 61 degrees, In
the news U.S. Steel raided their prices 6.5 percent . Nixon and Reagan both are
clowns. I hope people will realize that they are disastrous for this nation. My Sweet Lord is
the number one song out right now.
18 January 1971 Monday
I was up at 8, took a shower before going off
to Cypress. I rode my bike because it was such a pretty day. I went to both of
my classes. We watched a movie on Population Ecology in Anthropology, and I
received back my test in Asian Civilization. I got a B plus on it which
surprised me. After that I rode my bike to the Imperial Bank to cash my check
from Taco Bell. I paid back Donna, Mom, and Karen Gramsted the money I had borrowed.
After coming home from Cypress, Jerry Smith and
I went to the Santa Ana Draft Board to ask about our student deferments. The
lady there said we had to complete 30 unites our freshman year and 60 by our
sophomore year and at least 12 unites a semester. I was glad to hear that
because I thought you had to take 30 a year and I am only taking 28 though I
will have 61 unites at the send of this semester. I came home around 5 and went
back up to Cypress to study for my
California History Test that’s tomorrow, I came home at 9 and some woman had
called asking questions about the Magnolia Cemetery which I had done my report
on. I went to bed at 11:30. It sure was
hot and smoggy today The 95 degrees was
a record high for January. In the news there is a massive oils spill in the San
Francisco Bay from two tankers
colliding.
19 January 1971 Tuesday.
Today is my Dad’s 46th birthday. He
was born in Portales, New Mexico. It was another warm and smoggy day. I was up
at 8 and I called Ralph Ludders to ask
if he wanted to ride up to Cypress with me now that my car is fixed. He didn’t because he
was too tired . In fact, he didn’t even make it to Mr. reeve’s class in which
we had a test. So, I rode my bile instead of taking the car. I think I did
fairly well on it. After class went to
the Bernstein House where I saw Donna playing cards with Ernest Pond and two
other kids named Ken Van Arsdale and Nienke. I joined them and played Spoons,
Hearts and “Command and Control” all afternoon long. I skipped my health class
abut did go to P.E. It was too hot and smoggy to really play well at volleyball.
So, then I went back to the Bernstein House
and played cards until I had to
leave for work. I rode my bike over to
Taco Bell on Lincoln where I had to be at work at 3:30. It was a very slow day and the only high light
was Leo Waldman coming up expectantly and caught Larry Fagan, Jean Van der Merghal and
I playing cards. He wasn’t too mad, but he wasn’t happy either. As that Jean
and Larry are still in High School, I should have been the more responsible
one. After he left, I cleaned t the stand so good that Leo couldn’t possibly
find fault tomorrow. It was a cool night
as I rode home at 54 degrees, but the high today was 85.
20 January 1971
Wednesday
I didn’t go to my anthropology class because I
didn’t get up until 9 this morning as I was so tired. I rode my bike up to
Cypress and went to the Bernstein House
to play “Spoons’ with Ken Van Arsdale, his girlfriend Nienke and Donna until I went
my Anthropology lab at noon. It was a really simple one where all we did was
take eight pairs of white and red beans and count them as genes randomly
through 20 generations to see what we ended up with. Today was my last lab. I
sure did enjoy this class all semester long especially the field trip to San
Diego Zoo last November 3rd. After class John
Cunningham and I visited for a while with not having much to say. Then I went
back over to the Bernstein House to see if anyone was playing cards. No one was
, so I rode my bike home. I wrested until I went into work at 4:30 and worked
with Lorraine Stoffel until closing. It was a very slow and dull night. It was a very warm pleasant day until about 2:30 in the afternoon when it turned cool and overcast. Our warm
spell is over, and I am afraid we are headed towards crummy weather. It was 79 degrees in the day
ad 54 at night. I worked 6 hours
tonight.
21 January 1971
Thursday
I was up early so I could ride to school with
Donna. I didn’t want to go to my California History Class because nothing was
going on there, so I stayed in the Bernstein House and played cards until 1
where then I went to P.E. After school I had a letter from the Garden Grove
Historical Society in the mail. Then Donna and I went to the Army Navy Surplus
Store where we bought some clothes for going up to the mountains with the kids, we play cards with. I bought two pairs of bell
bottom jeans and a navy Pea-Coat.
After that I came home and watched TV until 6 when Then I went to see Mr. Don Dobmeier at his house to give him a copy of my Magnolia
Cemetery report for the Garden Grove Historical Society. Coming back home I watched
The Africa Queen on television for the rest of the night unto 11 . Afterwards I
studied for my anthropology test and
then went to bed. It was 69 degrees today. Today is my cousin Larry Fagen’s 17th
birthday . He was born in Lynnwood, California.
The letter from Don Dobmeier was dated January
20th. “Garden Grove Historical Society P.O. Box 503 Garden Grove,
Calif. 92642, Jan. 20, 1971. Ed, good to her from you- Yes! The society would
like to have a copy of your paper-This would be the first paper done by a
member and we’d certainly like to have it. Publication is not impossible-we’re
going a head with Edward Ware’s papers of 1890- These are more or less
historical curiosity. Depending on your paper and our funds we’ll either
publish your paper alone or in conjunction with others we’re expecting on the
Garden Grove school district. If you can
get your paper to e soon-by mail or I can pick iy up- phone 530-1448 we’’ look
it over and make plans. Tom Reeves tells me its good and definitive.
And we’d like to have you speak to the society
in March (March 2) review your paper and tell about the experience you had
researching it. Evidently some interest has been generated about various
cemeteries -several inquiries have been received by Cal State College at
Fullerton special collection about Magnolia and Anaheim – and you may have been
contacted by Rudolph Cote of Anaheim. He wrote us an enquiry which I replied to and referred him to
you Also Zio Friis was interested in the
Magnolia Cem. (Westminster Cem.) for some reason. Word has come to us that
LeRoy Doig has written a book on the Newhope area. Just when it’ll be out I
don’t’ know-but expect fairly soon. Expect to hear from you soon Don Dobmeier
PS good work on the land marks.”
22 January 1971 Friday
Donna woke me at 7:30 this morning to go to
Cypress with her. I had a test in Anthropology which I think I did good on. I
found out that I got an A in my lab class and John Cunningham only got a C.
After class I went over to the Bernstein
House and sat with the kids. We made plans to go the Arrowhead Lake on the 31st
to go skiing and tobogganing. The rest of the time we played cards until about
2 then everybody broke up the game and left. I went home and took a nap before going into work at 4:30. Ralph Ludders
had called at 4 and asked whether I went to our class Thursday or not. He sure
is a mess in that class. I hope he can straighten up. At work the crew was
Karen Gramsted, her brother Jim, Jean Van der Merghal, and me. We had a fairly
slow night. The Alfie Fish and Chip place down the street called and the kids
there asked if we would exchange food with them again which we did. They get
tired of fish, and we get tired of Tacos. Leo Waldman will leave tomorrow to go
to Spain. I sure would like to trave
like that someday. My W-2 form came
today and I made over $1300 last year. It was a pretty day once the sun came
through the morning clouds. I worked 8 hours today. It was 70 degrees.
23 January 1971
Saturday
I slept in until 11:30 this morning . When I got
dressed, I just sat around and watched TV for most of the day until I had to go
back into work at 4:30. My Uncle and Aunt Milton and Marie and their kids Stephanie and Gregory came over
to the house today to visit. They brought some mattresses down for Mom and Dad.
At work it was busier than usual, and I was really tired by the time the shift
was over. Nothing much happened out of
the ordinary. . I worked 8 hours today. When
I came home at 12:30 I watched a movie “Mary of Scotland” with Kathryn Hepburn
in it. It was really good. I went to bed finally at 2:30. It was a pretty out today
though it was sort of cool out 69 degrees. My favorite songs out right now are
“If You Could Read My Mind” by Gordon Lightfoot, Stoney End” by Barbra
Streisand, 1900 Yesterday by the Orient
Express and We Got to Find You a woman by Todd Rundgren.
24 January 1971 Sunday
I didn’t
get up until noon and then read the Sunday paper for most of the day. It was a
very dreary, cold, winter day. Only 65 degrees. In the afternoon Charline ,
Dennis and James came over to see Donna and me. We made plans on what to do for
Mom and Dad’s 25th anniversary in March. Mom’s old boss from when she worked
at Optical Glass in Costa Mesa came over today
to say hello. His name is Ted Anderson. Jean Horan came down from her
cabin at Arrowbear today because one of their grandchildren is being christened.
She brought over some snow clothes for Donna and me to use when we go up next
weekend. Donna said that at work she was bothered by Terry Pierce who wanted
her to go out with him. What nerve. She told him to buzz off. I was going to go
to the movie with Jerry Smith tonight
but there just wasn’t anything that was good playing that we wanted to see. So,
I watched TV for the rest of the night and went to bed at 11. I did watch a movie
“The Good Earth” which was very good. In
the news another oil spill occurred this time on the East Coast new Haven Connecticut.
I still weigh 170 lbs.
25 January 1971 Monday
Donna woke me up at 8:30 to get up for school.
I took my own car after filling the tank at 33 cents a gallon. At Cypress I
talked to Ken Van Arsdale in the Bernstein House some and gave a letter I wrote
to the editor of the school’s newspaper. The rest of the time I studied some in
the library. I went into work at Taco Bell ay 3:30 and worked with Lorraine
Stoffel until closing. Somebody ordered
too many taco shells and we have them coming out of our ears. The night was slow,
so I went outside and cleaned the lot really well plus cleaned the bathrooms. I
worked seven hours today. When I came home, I watched the Carol Burnett Show on
TV then went to bed at 11:30. The weather was clear but cool at 70 degrees. In the news the
Manson family that was accused of murder in the Tate -La Bianca trial were all
found guilty. The trial lasted nine months and costed the taxpayers over
$700,000.
26 January 1971 Tuesday
I woke up at 7:30 and then got ready to go to
school. It sure was hard because I am not used to getting up so early. I took
my car to Cypress, but the starter is giving me trouble again. Dad
thinks it might be the celluloid on the battery cable. Anyway, at school, I
took my Anthropology final . I don’t have any idea how I did on it because I
thought I did well on the last test, but
I didn’t. It only took an hour to finish the final, so I came home and cleaned my room really well. I even
changed the furniture around. After that I took a nap at 1:30 for 2 hours. When
I woke up, I rode my bike down to Taco Bell to see what was going on there.
After that I rode down to Cypress and went to the library where I stayed until
7. At home I watched TV for the rest of the night including the Democratic
State of The Union response to Nixon.
Sen. Mansfield gave the rebuttal. I went to bed at 11. The weather was chilly
this morning, but it got quite warm by the afternoon at 80 degrees.
27 January 1971
Wednesday
Again, I was up at 7 to get ready to go to
Cypress . I drove to school because Donna’s car is acting up. Before taking my
final in Asian Civilization, Donna and I went to the Bernstein House and we
talked with Ernie Pond, and Nienke . The final wasn’t too bad, but I was so sleepy
I couldn’t concentrate. The final was at 8 this morning. Afterwards Donna and I
came back home, and I went back to bed until it was time ty go into work. Since
it was warm and pretty out, I rode my ten speed up to work, The night was very busy and Loraine
Stoffel who was in charge even closed up
early. Nobody came up to see me or anything tonight, so it was boring. I worked 7 hour today. I
received my tax return form from Seven Eleven
today. I made 98 dollars there
last December. In the news Russia said they landed a space craft on
Venus . Nothing else is in the news. The temperature was 90 degrees today. A Santa
Ana Wind condition kept the smog away.
28 January 1971 Thursday
I was up at 8:30 and prepared to go to Cypress.
I rode my bike because my final wasn’t until 10:30. It reached 90 degrees and
was a beautiful clear day. My final was for y California History class. I
believe I’m getting an A in there at
least I hope so. I talked to Ralph Ludders some. I think we will get at least
a C out of the class. His paper that he
did o he Sugar Beet Factory in Los Alamitos is going to be published by the
Orange County Historical Society. He is really excited about that. At home I
received a letter from Grandma Johnson saying that Ginger took the kids Chris
and Craig and left my cousin John Johnson. It’s really a shame. All afternoon
long , and it was a hot one, Donna and I made cookies to take up to the
mountains. Two batches didn’t tur out so well, only the Chocolate Chip and
Oatmeal batchers were good. I was called into work at 3:30 but I told Donna not
to tell them that I was home until they paid for waiting so long to call me.
All they think I do is set by the phone waiting for them to call ,me. I got
news for them. I worked 5 and a half hours with Larry Fagen tonight.
29 January 1971
I got up ay 7 t get ready to go to Cypress for
my only a class a final in Health that was at 8. After it was over , I went
back home ad slept until 1 in the afternoon. Then I called all the people who
were going to the mountains tomorrow. Finally, it was determined that only 5 of
us were going, Donna, Ken Van Arsdale, Nienke, Ernie Pond ad me. We are going
in Ernie’s VW. so, boy is it going to be crowded. I went into work at 4:30 and
with Karen Gramsted until closing. It
was a horrible night for Karen. Besides being super busy , the sinks were all
clogged up and Karen got Larry Fagen in trouble inadvertently. Larry’s friend
came down to the stand and started bugging Karen and she is teasing let it be
known that Larry was having sex with Pam Bullington. Larry was always bragging
about “balling” her and as it turned out Larry’s friend was Pam’s brother. He
was so mad he went and got Larry and his sister in trouble , the fink and now
they blame Karen who was simply a victim of unhappy circumstances. Oh, it was a
mess. I worked 8 hours tonight at it was 88 degrees during the day.
30 January 1971 Saturday
Donna and I were up at 5 this morning to get
ready to meet the other kids down at
Cypress. First, we had to pick Ken Van Arsdale up
and then meet Ernie and Nienke. In the Fine Arts’ parking lot, we piled everything into the VW and then we were on our way. We took the
freeway 91 to the Riverside Freeway the
up Crestline to Arrowhead. We got up there around 8:30. There was snow on the
ground but In another week, it will probably be gone. First thing we did was
take a hike and then had a snow fight. Then we played cards and ate hamburgers
for lunch. Afterwards Donna, Ken, Erie, and Nienke went ice-skating while I stayed behind and slept a while. Besides,
I was really feeling like a third wheel. In the evening we played more cards,
had spaghetti, and drank wine. We all got a bit tipsy and as we were all tired
went to bed by 8:30. Donna paired off with Ken and Ernie with Nienke while I
slept in my own sleeping bag. It was a restless night as I could hear the
others making love sounds. The weather was pretty nice out and clear. 55 degrees in the day. I
don’t know how low it got at night, but it was pretty cold. In the news Apollo
14 took off for a landing on the moon.
31 January 1971 Sunday
I woke up at 10:30 and the others were already
gone as they had gone out to eat breakfast somewhere. I didn’t want any. When
They came back, I was all dressed and we went driving around to play in the
snow. However, the snow was too icy and wet to realty have fun in it, so we went
to Arrowhead Lake until around 2 . We then went back to the cabin and played
cards until it was time to pack the car for a return trip. We left the mountains
at4:30 and stopped at a Del taco in San Bernardin to get some supper. After
that we made it back to Cypress without further interruptions and arrived there
at 7:30. We hit lot of traffic coming
down the mountain. In the parking lot , my car that was left there wouldn’t
start so we had to call Mom to come and get us. We were home by 8 and I went to
bed at 9. The weather up in the mountains was overcast and 55 degrees. All in all,
I didn’t have a very good time at Arrowhead, and I felt like I was an
intrusion. In the news Apollo 14 is having trouble docking the lunar module to
the control ship.
FEBRUARY
1 February 1971 Monday
First
day of the new month. It always seems that once January is out of the way, the
rest of the year goes so fast. Today I got up at 10 and read the newspaper.
Around 12:00 I ride my bike down to Cypress to try and start my car . It
started so I locked my bike up and took the car home. There I received a letter
from Kay Johnson, my cousin back in Texas./ She didn’t say much. I wrote her
back a letter until it was time to go int work at 3:30. We didn’t get our
paychecks in in time again because the lady didn’t bring them in time to be
signed. I know what I cleared though, $95. I worked with Lorraine Stoffel until
closing and it was super slow. At home I watched Carol Burnett and went to bed
at 11,30 . read a little of the “French Lieutenant Woman.” I weighed 170 lbs. I have to lose weight! The day was
over cast about 60 degrees. In the news Apollo 14 has the go ahead to land on
the moon. Worked 7 houses and masturbated 3 times.
2 February 1971 Tuesday
Today is Ground Hog’s Day and my cousin Gregory
Lynn Williams’ 9th birthday. He is my youngest cousin. The Ground
Hog couldn’t have seen his shadow
because it was cloudy and
overcast. I had a busy day today. First after cleaning up the kitchen, I went
down to Taco Bell and picked up my paycheck. Then I went to Imperial Bank and
deposited $60 into my checking account.
Afterwards I went to my Savings and Loan bank and deposited $25 there. After
that I went and had my hair cut then bought some oil and transmission fluid for my Ford Galaxy.
When I got all that running around done, I went to the Farmers and Merchant
Bank to get my 1971 car tags for the Ford. I later went over to see Ralph
Ludders and we went down to Cypress College to get my bike which I had left there
overnight. In the evening I went to the
Garden Grove Historical Society meeting. They discussed more business
plus had two elderly ladies give their experiences in early Garden
Grove. Our next meeting, I am going to give a report on the Magnolia Cemetery.
Mr. Elliott wants me to another paper for the society. I don’t know though. I
watched a good program on Hanoi at home.
3 February 1971
Wednesday
I didn’t do much of anything today compared to
yesterday. I went across the street to Jean Horan’s house, and we visited for a
while. Then I went over to Jerry Smith’s where I sold him some pens from the
Garden Grove Historical Society. Technically
the other side of Dale Street is in Anaheim and so Poes Street where Jerry
lives is in Anaheim. My sister Donna wasn’t home all day. I don’t know where she
was but probably at work. In the evening I went to the library at Cypress and
read until 7 when I came home and watched TV for the rest of the night with Mom
and Dad until 9. Then I went to my room and wrote up my talk for the next Historical
Society meeting. At Cypress, the campus sure seemed lonely. There was hardly a sou
there during the semester break. I’m so bored. I want something exciting to
happen. The weather was still cool although it was really sunny out. 68
degrees. In the news, foreign sources say we have invaded Laos with American
and South Vietnamese troops. There is no word from the White House or the Pentagon
to confirm or deny the charges. We probably did, the way the news has been
blacked out about it. Also, the post office is going to raise the cost of a
stamp to 8 cents in May. Governor Reagan’s budget drastically cut welfare and Medicare payments and has no new increased for higher
education.
KHJ’s
top 10 songs for this week are The Osmonds’ One Bad Apple, King Floyd, Groove
Me, Perry Como, It’s Impossible, Runt’s We Gotta Get You a Woman, Sweet Mary,
The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band Mr. Bojangles,
Jerry Reed’s Amos Moses, Stoney End, The Jackson 5’s Mama’s Pearl, I hear You knocking. I like Janis Joplin’s Me
and Bobbie McGee and the Carpenter’s For All We know.
4 February 1971
Thursday
Today is my sister Donna’s third anniversary
and from what I hear her husband Terry Pierce is leaving the state for good. I
hope that it is the last we see of him. They were married in 1968 in Las Vegas,
Nevada. It was a pretty day today, but it still is kind of cool out. The high
today was 68 degrees. I went down to Penny’s in the City of Orange Mall and put
four shirts on layaway. I’m going to start buying clothes on each paycheck.
That way I should have some nice things to wear. Donna went over to Ken Van
Arsdale’s today and Mom said she hit a car backing out at work. She said it
didn’t do much damage and it was in the parking lot. I drove around too much
today and wasted to much gas. I just filled the tank up last Tuesday at 29
cents a gallon. I get bad milage with my clunker anyway. Mom and Dad have been arguing
all evening, so I got out of the house by going to the show at the Edwards
Harbor Cinema and saw “Cromwell” which was about the English Civil War which was very good. It was playing with the
Baby Maker which was kind of interesting. Today I also went over to Charline
and Dennis’ apartment to see my nephew, James. I haven’t seen him all week. In
the news the United States and South Vietnam
have launched its biggest offensive in the Indochina wars. .
5 February 1971 Friday
In the news today astronauts Shepard and
Mitchell landed on the moon. This is the United States third moon landing and
already people think little of it. The weather is cool but clear and 68
degrees. I didn’t do much today. I loaned Charline $30 out of my savings
account and worked at Taco Bell for eight hours. I worked with Karen Gramsted
and the night wasn’t too bad. Karen wants me to come in and open up for her
tomorrow. I said I would. Grandma and Grandpa Williams are taking a trip back
to Texas to see Granny Rose. She is 97 years old. I don’t know how long they
plan on staying back there. Donna went out on a date with Ken Van Arsdale
today. I am putting on too much weight and am starting tomorrow I’m going on a
diet for sure. School starts up again on Monday for the Spring Semester. I hope
the new semester isn’t too hard. Since I don’t have many hours coming this
time, I think I’ll help Mr. Elliott do his paper on the Garden Grove water
district.
6 February 1971
Saturday
I got up at 8 to get ready for work. I opened
Taco bell up at 9 and was opened for business by 10. I was pretty busy and even
more so after Jim Gramsted came in at noon to help with the lunch rush. I worked until
4:30 when Karen Gramsted and my cousin Larry Fagen came in. When I got home, I was alone at the house because e Donna was
at work and Mom and Dad went over to my uncle and Aunt Milton and Marie
Williams. At home I watched King Kong my favorite movie until 7 then read some
more form Gone With the Wind, After that I went to bed. It was a pretty day although
still pretty cool out at 65 degrees. Astronauts Shepard and Mitchell are still
on the moon. I think they’re going to leave tomorrow. Shepard is the first man
to play golf on the moon. “I hear You knocking is the Number 1 song on the
radio.
7 February 1971 Sunday
I slept in late, until 11 . I got up and had
some breakfast of bacon and hot cereal. I also read the Sunday paper all
morning long. In the afternoon I rode my ten-speed bike down to Alpha Beta in the Stanton Plaza and bought some notebook paper and a few
other things for school tomorrow. In the evening I went to the Lowes Stanton
Theater at the Stanton Plaza and saw “On a Clear Day You can See Forever.” Which is always good and “Darlin’ Lil” which
was a little better. I didn’t eat much today as I’m trying to shrink my stomach. Dad filled
out his income tax forms today. He told Mom he will get $250 back from the feds
but will owe $99 to the state. In the news the men on the moon left to start
their journey back home. The weather was cool and foggy at night. 65 degrees.
8 February 1971 Monday
First day of the Spring Semester. I didn’t get
up until 10 because I didn’t have a class until 11. It was a foggy and hazy day
and pretty miserable at 64 degrees. My first-class Philosophy 1 A with Mr.
Gruver . I haven’t made up my mind whether I’m going to like this class or not.
It’s mandatory like my next class. I have Psychology 1A with Mr. Canova. I really like this class. The
first day we talked about ghosts and ESP. Ralph Ludders is taking the class
with me. I have a break after this class then I have the History of Revolutions
with my favorite teacher Mr. Reeve. It’s only a 1-unit class and meets but once
a week. It’s pretty interesting except that
this one guy is obnoxious who thinks he Che Guevara and is trying to dominant
the class. In Mr. Reeve’s class there is a total of 7 students. I couldn’t get
that in a private school I rode my bike
up and back from Cypress but at my night class I took the Ford. I have Crafts
at night with Miss Felos. It seems like it will be fun! All in all, I’m
satisfied with my classes. I hope I can say the same tomorrow. I got a letter from
Grandma Johnson in the mail. She didn’t say much. Charline and my nephew James
came over today.
9 February 1971 Tuesday
I woke up at 5 with a terrible stomach ache . I
couldn’t go back to sleep, so I got up and went and laid down on the carpet in
the front room in front of the wall heater as it was chilly. Mom was up at 6 to
fix breakfast and get ready for work when a rattling noise began. Laying on the
floor I felt the house begin to sway back and forth then it began to shake
fervently before it subsided. We had a severe earthquake. Mom quickly went and
turned on the radio for news, but the stations were blacked out for about 15
minutes before coming back on the air. It wasn’t until later in the morning did
the whole extent of the earthquake was known. It registered 6.5 on the Richter scale
and was centered 10 miles east of Newhall in the San Fernando Valley, which was
the most severely hit area. So far 32 people are known to have died. Two
hospitals had collapsed killing many persons inside. Also, the earthquake caused
a crack in a dam, and 80,000 people were
evacuated from the San Fernando Valley. Many freeway overpasses also collapsed,
and President Nixon declared Southern California a disaster area. Here in
Orange County the only real damage was done in the Los Alamitos area and there
were cracks in the Garden Grove Freeway. However, we are fine. Also, in the
news today Apollo 1 splashed own safely and Sharon Atkins of the Tate-Bianca
murders confessed. It was clear and hot today at 80 degrees. There was a full
noon tonight.
At
Cypress all anyone one would talk about was the earthquake however my classes
were cancelled.
10 February 1971
Wednesday
I got up at 9:30 to get ready for school. Charline
my nephew James was over this morning. He sure is getting cuter as grows. I am
going to make him a toy stuffed butterfly I my Craft Class as a stuffed object
is our first project. At Cypress I have Philosophy with Mr. Gruver and Psychology with Mr.
Lawrence Canova. Afterwards I went to the Bernstein House and visited a while
with Nienke. At home I cleaned up the house
and tried to fix my bike’s flat tire. I bought another inner tube, but
it burst when I over filled it with air. After that it was about time for my
Craft class which starts at 7. I went to Cypress and to the Library to read
before class. There I saw Andy Cunningham, John’s brother who I haven’t seen
since last June. He said that he’s out of the service now. In art I began to
dye the muslin material by batiking it for the butterfly I am making for James.
I painted the cloth with melted wax and then dyed it. I share an art locker
with a kid named Kent Larsen. He seems a pretty cool had. At home I cut out the
rest of the pattern for my butterfly and watched some TV. It sure was hot today
85 degrees. Vice President Agnew came to Los Angeles to inspect the damage done
from yesterday’s earthquake. They say 51 people have died now with a billion
dollars in damages.
11 February 1971 Thursday
I woke up at 8 and got up to get ready for
school. At 9:30 my first class began. It was Speech1A with Mr. William Svendsen. We had to give a
short introduction of the person who sat next to us. At the 11 o’clock break I
went to the Bernstein House and ate
lunch with my sister Donna. I met this
Cuban refugee who is a friend of Donna’s. He was very interesting to talk with. At noon, my Creative Writing
Class began with Mr. Armen Manis. We just talked about characterization. After
that I went to Volleyball in my P.E. where Mr. Mr. Kenneth Rubino already had put us in squads and had us play
a game. All my classes were over by 3 so
I went home and straightened up the house some for Mom. I went across the
street to see Jean Horan to ask her about
my butterfly pattern as she is a professional power sewer. She said it would
turn out good. Her daughter Carol’s youngest baby Moonie is sick. I hope not
seriously. He was born just before John Griggs in July 1968 died. Carol has since remarried
Mike Randall. I don’t know if the Drug Agents are still after them. I fixed spaghetti
for dinner tonight and Charline, Dennis, and James ate dinner with us.
Afterwards I went to the Library at Cypress and stayed until closing. The
weather is clear and hot 90 degrees. There’s a full moon tonight. The earthquake
disaster is still in the news. I am reading Stephen Vincent Benét’s John
Brown’s Body
12 February 1971 Friday
There was no school today as it is Lincoln’s
Birthday Holiday. I slept for most of the day away. When I did get up, I
cleaned up some of the house and also went outside to wash my car. It hadn’t
been cleaned in a long time.
When Mom came home from
work, she gave me some money to go get my bike tire fixed. In the evening Mom
and Dad went out for dinner and Donna had a date with Ken Van Arsdale so I was home alone for much of the
evening. I watched a special on TV about Lincoln’s assignation called “They
Killed the President.” It was pretty good.
Around 8, I took my bike out for a ride now that it was
fixed. It was such a warm clear night. I couldn’t resist getting some exercise.
I was going to ride down to Taco Bell to see the kids there, but I changed my
mind and rode over to the Orange County Plaza, then rode down to Disneyland to
see what was going on there as I was restless. I saw the firework at 9 but only
the very last of them.
I rode up and down the strip
on Katella some. There were a lot of
servicemen out walking, mainly Marines I think from El Toro. They were probably
looking for girls as there are so many motels on the strip.
I then rode back to the
Orange County Plaza on Brookhurst and Chapman where I stopped at Mr. Donut for
some donuts and a coke. I rode by Gilbert and Capri Streets where I saw John
Cunningham and his brother Andy walking Schulz their German Shephard. That made
me miss him all the more.
I didn’t get to bed
until 12:30 after watching Ray Milland in the “Uninvited.” It was 91 degrees
today.
13 February 1971
Saturday
I didn’t get up until 10. Dad didn’t have to go
into work at Coors until noon and Mom was out having her hair fixed at the
salon. Donna had to go into work at 1:30. My nephew James was over at the house
today and Mom and Dad took him to Knotts Berry Farm. I filled my car with gas
today and it’s going up to 35 cents a gallon at most places. I hope I can make
it last.
I rode my ten speed to
work where I worked with Dave Bark instead of my cousin Larry Fagen because he
is going with Karen Gramsted to a concert to hear Smokey Robinson and the
Miracles play at the Greek Theater tonight. We were pretty busy for a while during the dinner rush but then
it slacked off. Dave says he’s going to quit at the end of the month. I’ll
believe it when he does. I got a tip of 25 cents tonight. It was the first time
in a long time. I worked 8 and half hours today.
At home I watched TV for a while
then read some more form John Brown’s Body before going to bed at 2.
It was a warm pleasant
day although not as warm as yesterday. It was only 75 degrees. The full moon I
starting to wane as it goes into another quarter.
14 February 1971 Sunday
I got up at 9:30 but didn’t do much all day.
When it warmed up in the afternoon, I laid out in the backyard, hoping to start
a tan. I read “The Andromeda Strain” today. I didn’t like it all that much.
Mom and Dad went up to
Yucaipa to see Grandma and Grandpa Williams. They live at 33803 Nebraska Street.
Charline and Dennis came over to the house in the evening to watch “Ben Hur” in
color on the TV. It was good although I’ve seen it at the movies before. My
nephew James is sick. I think his asthma is acting up again. Charline said she
thinks she is pregnant again, but probably not.
I should start reading
some of my text books for school since it is a long weekend. I had a weird
dream about Taco Bell last night. I dreamed we were closing but customers kept
coming anyway, way into the night so we couldn’t go home. Funny kind of
nightmare.
The weather was warm in
the afternoon but became very chilly in later on. It was 70 degrees today. In
the news the death toll from last Tuesday’s earthquake is now finally at 62
people. The worse picture, for me, was of the freeway overpassed that crushed a
vehicle.
15 February 1971 Monday
I didn’t have any school today because it was
Washington’s Birthday. In the morning I typed up my Magnolia Cemetery report
for the Garden Grove Historical Society’s newsletter and then rode my bike over
to Mr. Dobmeier’s house to deliver it. After that I went over to Jerry Smith’s
house on Poes Street and visited with
him for a while.
At home I read some of
Victor Frankl’s “Mans Search for Meaning” until my uncle R L Williams came to
the house for a visit. He’s my eldest
uncle who lives in Northern California.
He and my aunt Jerry came down to visit Grandma and Grandpa Williams and since they were down here, they came to
see Mom and Dad. My sister Charline, Dennis, and James came over because R.L.
had never met Dennis Wachs before.
My aunt Bonnie Fagan
called and said that her husband Bill was sick with gall stones again. After RL
left at 8 , I watched some TV and again
saw W.C Fields in the movie Poppy. He is
always good. I went to bed at midnight. The weather today is very cool, crummy,
and overcast. Looks like it might rain but doesn’t feel like it.
16 February 1971
Tuesday
I got up at 8 to prepare for school. I couldn’t
find my gym trunks I brought home to wash until I called my sister Charline up
and she had them in her laundry basket. I had to drive all the way over to her
place to retrieve them.
My first class at Cypress this semester was
Speech 1A at 9:30 for an hour and a half. At the 11 o’clock break I went over
to the Bernstein House to get a coke and
then I went to the library to read and hoped to see John Cunningham there. At
noon I have Creative Writing for another
hour and a half. My last class is Volley Ball in PE, but we didn’t have to suit
up after all because of the rain.
I left Cypress and went
back to Garden Grove afterwards to clean the kitchen for Mom before going off to Taco Bell to pick up my paycheck. I made $45. I put $15
in my checking account, $20 in my savings account and spent $10 getting some
shirts off o layaway at Penney’s at the Orange County Plaza.
In the evening I just
took a nap an watched some TV . Chanel 13 had a program called “X-Rated Box
Office Boom” about explicit movies that are rated X now. Midnight Cowboy which
John and I went to see last year was rated X. The I watched All in The Family
and at 10:30 on Channel 5, W.C Fields in the Big Broadcast of 1938.
I got a letter from Grandma Johnson today. She said that
Ginger is suing my cousin John Johnson for a divorce.
My sister Donna added a
class to her schedule at Cypress today. She said that May Company at the Buena
Park Plaza isn’t giving her many hours and she may have to quit. She wants to
get on at Taco Bell. Charline may be pregnant again. That would be nice. Karen
Gramsted wants me to work for her this Friday and Saturday
It was a cold dreary
day, and it drizzled all day. 55 degrees.
In grandma Johnson’s letter
to mom in which she wrote: “Friday morning. All well here. Guess will have
another sand storm today. Sure had a dilly yesterday.
Well John called last
night. Said Ginger had just called. She at Memphis Tenn. Had a good job. Kids
stayed in the nursery in day time. She was buying a new car. Also suing for a
divorce so guess that’s that. Said the kids had never asked about him. She thought that would
hurt more than anything else
which it did. Said she had never wrote her folks yet. Guess that was true as
John said there was 3 letters there from her folks.
John was still working at the service station
& a different one in day tie & better pay. So maybe he will make it
since he got over the shock of his little home being shattered. Life goes on
regardless.
Well J W’s old cows
have been shelling out the calves . All have calves, 27 little white faces. He
had such bad luck last year. Lost so many.
He’s really tickled.
We went to the lake Monday. Stayed all night.
Went to Stamford to see Mr. Maly, & on home. Think I wrote you this. Mr. Terry
was buried yesterday. Poor old fellow better off. They removed both legs. Kenny
& Florence is in California & her girls live. Hope they wasn’t in the
quake. My wasn’t that terrible. I’ll just face the cyclones. Can see them
coming.
And its so dry. May be
a stormy spring when it does start raining.
Hope all stay well & write me
Love from us Mom.”
17 February 1971
Wednesday
I got up
around 9:30 and rode my ten speed to Cypress because it was a nice pretty day
out although cool at 70 degrees. It’s about 4 and a half miles from Mom’s to
school. I ride down Katella to Holder and then up to Orange the back way into Cypress.
There was snow in the mountains which level was down to 5000 feet. I visited
with Monica Munoz in my Philosophy Class
where the instructor discussed the history of Psychology. Afterwards I
saw Ralph Ludders ad I visited some with him before he went off to his class.
At home, my sister Donna had a letter from Grandma Williams who sent her $100
to pay off her divorce from Terry Pierce. I cleaned up the house some for Mom then got ready to go back to Cypress for my
night art class. I went back early however to study in the Library, and I saw
John Cunningham there reading alone. Reminded me of seeing him in the library
at Rancho reading alone. He always seemed to be alone. I am almost done with my
stuffed butterfly project for art. I came home afterwards and there I watched
another W.C. Fields movie on Channel 5 called It’s A Gift from 1934 before
going to bed at 12:30. W.C. Fields is hilarious. The songs I like now are Tom Jones’
She a Lady, Janis Joplin’s Me, and Bobby McGee, George Harrison’s All Things
Must Pass. And Aretha Franklin’s You’re All I need to Get By.
18 February 1971
Thursday
I was up at 8 to get ready for school. In
Speech1A we were put in discussion groups again. During the 11 o’clock break I
was able to sell my sister Donna’s Western Civilization text books to Monica
Munoz for $8. I also talked with Dave Osterman some whom I have known since elementary
school. In Creative Writing , nothing much happened ad in PE my team won both
times. There’s a girl on my team named Rosemary Whitmore who I’d like to get to
know better. After school , I came home and cleaned the hose. Then I went across
the street to see Jean Horan, but she wasn’t feeling well due to allergies. Mom
went grocery shopping today so there is food again in the house to make sandwiches
and snacks. In the late afternoon I went to the store and bought some more paraffin
wax and Saylor dye for my butterfly batiking project. Mom sewed it up so all I have to do is stuff it with batting.
The weather was pretty and lightly clouded
day though it was cool at 70 degrees. In the new President Nixon has proposed a
National health Bill that will mainly be
financially supported by employers. A year ago, about this time John Cunningham
and I were in an automobile accident on the \way to see Midnight Cowboy.
19 February 1971 Friday
I got up
at 9:30 to get ready for school and it was a cold morning and overcast. In the
afternoon it rained for a while, but it cleared up by the evening although it
was still cold and windy. 55 degrees. There’s nothing much happening in
Philosophy and psychology. I went to
work at 4:30 at Taco Bell to take Karen Gramsted’s place which I said I would.
It was a steady night but not too busy. I worked with Dave Bark until 12:30 and
worked 8 hours. Nothing happed much today worth recording. Leo Waldman hired a
new boy who Dave said was a friend of
his. I haven’t seen him yet. My sister Donna wants to get hired down here . May
be she can take Lorraine Stoffel’s place when she leaves. The month of February
sure is going by fat. It won’t be long until it’s March. In the Orange county youth
subculture, there is a new awakening among many kids to Jesus. A group in Costa
Mesa started a Jesus Freak church for hippies. Even here at Cypress there are
three new religious clubs. Many cars are now carrying bumper stickers om their
car about religion. I see a lot of stickers with the word Maranathan on it. I
am glad for the new awakening for I have been a Jesus Freak for years.
20 February 1971
Saturday
I got up at 8 this morning to get ready for
work. I opened u Taco Bell at 9 and Leo Waldman came in shortly thereafter. It
was a very busy day and Jim Gramsted, and I didn’t get a chance to get much prep
done besides waiting on customers. Karen Gramsted and my cousin Larry Fagan
came in to relive us at 4:30. Larry said his father Bill will have to go in to
the hospital tomorrow and might have to have a kidney removed. At home in Garden
Grove, no one was there so I went to the store and bought some batten to stuff
my butterfly project. Later I watched some TV mainly Mary Tyler Moore and read
some. I went to bed at 11 as I was
tired. My grades from the Fall term came in the mail today. I received an A in
Asian Civilization, a B in California History, a B in my Health Class, and a B
in PE. I made the President’s Honor roll with a GPA total of 3.15 for the 45
and half unites I have taken at Cypress since 1969. The weather today was clear
and cold with strong winds. 60 degrees. An earthquake happened tonight at 10 about
4.5 on the Richter scale as an aftershock they say.
21
February 1971 Sunday
I
got up at 10:30 and in the morning I mainly read the Sunday Register newspaper.
In the news the AVVN is being attacked by the army of the North Vietnamese in
Laos. They will probably be defeated
without American support. I wanted Mom to sew up my stuffed butterfly project, but she hadn’t had time yet. In the
afternoon I drove the Ford around Santa
Ana looking for some used bookstores but
saw that they were all closed. By coincidence I saw John Cunningham and his
brother on the Freeway, and it looked like they were returning from a
trip to either Dana Point or San
Clemente. John and I used to spend the whole summer at the beaches there. In
the evening Mom and Dad went over to my aunt and Uncle, Bonnie, and Bill Fagen to see Bill as he’s not been well. When my
sister Donna came home from work, we ordered a pizza and then I left the house
and went to the Edward Cinema in Costa Mesa
and saw Dustin Hoffman in “Little Big Man.” It was excellent and very
entertaining. I got home at midnight and went to bed. It was a clear pretty day although windy and cool at 65 degrees.
Note-
[Little Big Man was released December 23, 1970
and was a revisionist Western where Native Americans are depicted sympathetically,
and the United States Cavalry are depicted as villains. The revision uses
elements of satire and tragedy to examine prejudice and injustice. Little Big
Man is an anti-establishment film of the period, indirectly protesting
America's involvement in the Vietnam War by portraying the U.S. military
negatively.]
22 February 1971 Monday
I
got up at 9 and cleaned up the house before going to Cypress. It still looked
like rain out, so I drove the Ford Galaxy rather than take my ten speed. Philosophy
and Psychology were both boring though
my History of Revolution class was interesting. Mr. Reeve said that he
nominated my Magnolia Cemetery report for a historical award given by the Orange County Historical
Society. I probably won’t get it but still its
ice that he did that for me. I got myself an locker in the Fine arts
Building now. I was sure glad to get it for
I wanted one, but I will have to share it. At night I went to my Craft’s Class
and worked some more on my butterfly project. After coming home after class, I
watched the Carol Burnett Show, then worked on my paper for Creative Writing. I
went to abed at 1. In the news a storm of tornadoes hit the Southern States
with 80 people killed. I received a letter in the mail from Grandma Johnson,
but it didn’t say much. My uncle Bill Fagan went into the hospital today. He
may have a kidney removed. It was an overcast day at 55 degrees. Today was Brenda
Ludder’s birthday and she turned 18. She was only 17 when she married Ralph
last September. She was born in Tyler Texas and is a Texan like me.
23 February 1971 Tuesday
I
got up at 8 to prepare for school. I went to my Speech 1 A and Creative Writing
classes where nothing special happened in those classes. In P.E. Mr. Rubini
switched or teams around again and now I am on a real crummy one. I went home
afterwards and cleaned up the house some
for Mom. In the evening I watched TV,
especially a good program on “the selling
of the Pentagon.” It was really scary how much money the military is spending
on propagandizing us. In the news President Nixon approved a wage control measure
on Construction workers today. My sister Charline called today and wanted my
sister Donna and Me to get together to plan Mom and Dad’s 25th
Wedding Anniversary party. Donna was bugged by the bank for her car payment
being late. I finally finished sewing up my batiked Butterfly’s wings. It is about
3 feet wide with its wing span. I guess
I will turn it in tomorrow. I’m still on my diet and I weigh 172 pounds. My
goal is to be at 155 pounds by Spring. The weather today was pretty with very
blue skies but still kind of cold out at 65 degrees. Though my sins are like
scarlet I pray someday they will be as white as
snow.
24 February 1971 Wednesday
I
didn’t go to school today. I didn’t feel like it. I’ve had an awful headache. I
have had it all day. My sister Charline and nephew James were over here this
morning doing their wash. Jean Horan is still sick with a cold. In the afternoon I cleaned up the house
and did some batiking for my craft class tonight. I went shopping today also, for some more food for the
diet I am on. Mom went to the doctor’s today. She is now on the Kaiser Program,
and she didn’t like it. My aunt Bonnie Fagan called today and said Bill will
have surgery tomorrow. On my way up to Cypress I saw a real pretty vapor trail in the sky this evening at 6:30. It was real
bright glowing against the night sky ad it gave a rainbow effect. It was very
pretty. In my Craft class we didn’t do much , just dyed some more Muslin cloth.
The weather today was nice but rather
cool. 65 degrees. In the news the South Vietnamese Army is still in trouble in
Laos.
25 February 1971 Thursday
I
was up at 8 this morning to get ready for school. In Speech1A my panel group
decided to do our discussion on the influence of the Beatles on American
Culture. In Creative Writing Mr. Manis
read my story and said he though t it was the best in the class. I went to PE
and played volleyball. After showering in the locker room, I saw Ralph Ludders
on the Piazza heading towards the Library. We visited with him as we hadn’t talked in a long while.
I told him to wish Brenda an happy belated birthday. We aren’t such good
buddies as we were las summer. You wouldn’t even know that I was his best man
at his wedding. Even though we will go our separate ways, Ralph will always be my most trusted friend after telling him about
how I felt about John Cunningham last year. At home Mo went to Dr. DeLille our
family doctor we have had since I was little. He gall bladder is fiving her
trouble again. My sister Donna said she and Ken Van Arsdale have broken up. She
seemed depressed over it because he dumped her. Poor Donna, I wish I could help
her find an honest loving man that she is worthy of. My sister Charline, Dennis
and James came by the house this evening. James is beginning to speak more
plainly now. I went to the show in the
evening and saw “Tell Them Willie Boy Is Here,” “Diary if a Mad Housewife, “Z”
and “The Great White Hope” at the Westminster Edward Cinema. My favorite was
the political thriller Z although the others were interesting. The weather was
the same as yesterday 70 degrees. I
weighed in at 168 pounds in P.E.
26 February 1971 Friday
I
woke up at 9 and showered and shaved for school. It was too windy to ride my
ten speed to Cypress, so I drove the Ford. I went to both of my classes today
even though nothing happened much in them. Back home I cleaned the kitchen for Mom
who came home from work because she didn’t feel well. My Aunt Bonnie Fagan
called in the afternoon and said that my cousin Larry asked me to take his shift
tonight so he could go see Bill in the hospital. I said I would. I later went
across the street and showed Jean Horan the design I am making for by batik shirt
and she really liked it. Jean has always encouraged my artistic projects. I
rode my bike up Western to Lincoln to go to work at Taco bell tonight, even
though it was cold and windy. Jim Gramsted, Jean Van der Merghal, and I were arguing
again at least they were. Jean is the taco and tostado shell fryer which used
to be Jim’s job. I didn’t get too involved with them because it’s so immature
to keep arguing with high schoolers who think they have to be right
about everything. They were having a pissing contest over who were doing the most
work. They can’t seem to get along so why say anything to them. It was an exciting
night as my cousin Larry cane up with his friends, right after Dave Bark had come up with his
friends. Dave quit last Wednesday. I don’t know when Leo will reschedule us. Then
former fellow employees Ken Grant and Dave Young and their friends came up to hang out. Then Jean
who had left came back up with his friends. My cousin Larry is going to get in
trouble with his friends if he isn’t careful. They brag about stealing 8 track
players from people’s cars. I worked 8 hours closing at midnight and getting
out of there at 12:30. It was a windy
and cool day at 65 degrees.
27 February 1971 Saturday
I
slept in until 11 and then got up and fixed some breakfast. Mom and Dad were
already gone. They had taken my nephew James out to see the Lion Safari in
Irvine. I talked with my sister Donna for most of the afternoon. She was still upset
over her breakup. She also wants to change her major to either Undeclared or
anthropology. She was also depressed because her lawyer said she might not get
her divorce from Terry Pierce after all
because her lawyer can’t locate him to have hi sign the papers. If that is the
case , she will have to pay the entire $300 herself. Later in the afternoon, I
worked some more on my shirt I am designing for having to go into work at 4:40.
I worked with my cousin Larry Fagan
until 11 when he left to go off
with a friend. I said I would close up by myself which I did at midnight. I worked
8 hours, and it was a slow night,
probably due to the cold wind that was
blowing pretty strong. It was only 60 degrees out. I am still on my diet although I went off it some yesterday. I weigh
at 168 pounds. The doctors still don’t know what is wrong with my uncle Bill
Fagan. My uncle and Aunt Milton and Marie Williams came over to visit with Mom
and Dad tonight. Nothing much in the news but the war in Viet Nam. Blessed are
the Peace Makers for they love all men as much as the Lord does.
28 February 1971 Sunday
Well,
another February has come and gone. I always liked February because it’s the shortest
month . Today was a very windy , cold day. The wind was very gusty. Mom had her
hair styled today and she baked a turkey and dressing meal for supper. I went
off my diet to have some. I probably gained all 5 pound back but who cares? I don’t
have anyone wanting me. Grandma Williams and my Aunt and Uncle Mattie Lee and Wallace
Williams came by this evening and had supper with us. Grandpa Williams didn’t
come over because he was still visiting Bill Fagan in the hospital. I visited
with Grandma Williams a while about
Granny Rose who was 95 years old last November. She is the only Great
Grandparent I still have alive. I also asked her about some of our relatives
named Peacock who built the town of Peacock in Stonewall County, Texas which was
blown away by a tornado in 1914. I guess Wallace and Mattie Lee are going to move back to Lubbock, Texas
sometime in March where he has a new
job. My aunt Minnie Lee Williams they say has lost a lot of weight working for the Seventh Day Adventists who
don’t eat meat. In the evening II went through a lot of old junk I was saving
and threw some out and packed away the rest better. I watched some TV mostly
“The First Churchills” and then went to bed . It was a pretty, clear skies day
at 60 degrees.
MARCH
1 March 1971 Monday
I went to school today. In philosophy, I said I
would give Monica Munoz a ride to school until she gets her car fixed. In
psychology we learned about partial reinforcement and how it works. It’s a good
thing to know. Mr. Reeve canceled my Revolution class for today, so I went home
and cleaned up the kitchen . In the mail I got a post card from Pam Husky. She’s
visiting Houston. I also got a card from
Cal State Fullerton saying to send my transcripts to that school. In the
afternoon I finished dying my shirt and all I have to do now is a few finishing
touches before I’m through. I went down to Taco Bell and picked up my check. I
made $48. Karen Gramsted worked tonight and said I’m to work Thursday and Saturday from now on. This Friday I got to
work also. I didn’t do much in my craft class . It was really windy again
today, a strong heavy wind. 60 degrees. March is beginning in its traditional
way. We had another earthquake today, separate from the San Gabriel fault. This
was in La Habra, Orange County. Donna had a dream last night about a bad quake.
I’ve had dreams too, even before February 9. Someone bombed the National
Capitol today.
2 March 1971 Tuesday
I took Monica Munoz to school today. I didn’t
do anything in my Speech class and nothing in Creative Writing. I had my
transcripts sent from Cypress to Fullerton. Now I got to get them from Ranch Alamitos
my old high school. I put $40 in my savings account and $10 in my checking
account. I’ll have to give $20 to Charline for my contribution for Mom’s 25th
anniversary. In the afternoon, Mom made a cherry topped cheese cake and Donna
went job hunting. She may get a job at Mr. Donut in the Orange County Plaza. That
is where John Cunningham and I went after Disneyland that July night last year.
Charline and Dennis got a dog for James. It’s some kind of wire-haired mutt but
kind of cute. In the evening I went to the Garden Grove Historical Society and
gave my talk on the Quaker/Westminster Cemetery across from my old Junior High
School on Magnolia. I sure was nervous and scared. I went home afterwards
around 10:30 and went to bed at 11. The weather was pretty and nice because the
wind stopped blowing. 63 degrees. Mom is planning on giving my uncle and aunt
Wallace and Mattie Lee Williams a going away party this Saturday. They are moving to Lubbock
Texas from Yucaipa. I got to get going with my school work as I have been
slacking lately.
3 March 1971 Wednesday
I got up at 9 to get ready for school. I went
over to Monica Munoz’ house and took here and Karen Wear to Cypress. Nothing is
happening much of Philosophy or Psychology. After coming home, I cleaned up the
house for Mom and then took a nap until 6:30. I decided not to go to my art
craft class because I am finished with all my projects. I went to the show
instead and saw “When Dinosaurs Ruled the Earth “ and “Trog.” They were pretty
funny although I suppose they were not meant to be. At home I went to bed
around midnight. The weather was still clear but cool. Kent Larsen and I are
going to Newport together to the Tandy store there to buy some leather for our
next craft project. I just found out that Kent is a Capricorn. I knew he would
be anyway because I am attracted to male Capricorns and female Geminis. John
Cunningham was born January 9, 1951, Ralph Ludders January 11, 1951, and Kent on
January 13 1951. I met them all separate from each other. Jerry Smith being
born on the same day as me is an Arian like me.
KHJ 93’s
top ten songs this week are Santana’s Oye Como Va, Tom Jones’ She’s a Lady, The
Temptation’s Just My imagination, Me and Bobbie McGee, Mama’s Pearl, For All We
know, One Bad Apple, Credence Clearwater Revivals Have You Ever Sen the Rain?
Bobby Sherman’s Cried Like a Baby, and Amos Moses.. like Brewer and Shipley’s One Toke Over the
Line and Marvin Gaye’s What’s Going On.
4 March 1971 Thursday
I went to Cypress today but didn’t do much. In
Speech, Mr. Svendsen videotaped me, and I was awful. I didn’t realize my voice
was so weird and my Southern accent so bad. Yeech! At lunch I went to the
Bernstein House and saw my sister Donna and Nienke there. Nienke had an
Afghanistan puppy with her. It was really cute, all legs. Mr. Manis didn’t have
class today, so I went to the library and read “The Rock Revolution.” It’s
pretty interesting and in P.E., we finally won a game in volleyball. I had to
go straight from Cypress to Taco Bell and worked with my cousin Larry Fagan for
7 hours. When we closed up and I was done at 10:30 I went home. There Bob
Anderson called me and wanted me to help him in his Anthropology lab that he
missed. I used to work with Bob for about a month at a 7-11 Store. I received a
letter from Pam Husky which didn’t say much except that her brother Buddy is
farming now. I have to finish my letter back to het before this weekend or I’ll probably net to it. I have to work
tomorrow in the day, so I am not going to go to school . The weather was
scattered clouds and cool. 65 degrees.
5 March 1971 Friday
I got up at 10 to get ready to go into work at
Taco Bell. Charline and my nephew James were over this morning. James was mad
at Dad today for yelling at him. Charline and Dennis went to Disneyland. Tomorrow,
I guess, Mom still is going to give a going away party for Wallace and Mattie
Lee Williams. I went to work at 11 and worked with Carrie Pottsburg, Leo
Waldman’s sister-in-law until 2. It was really busy during the lunch rush.
After leaving work I rushed over to Kent Larsen house to get him then we went
and picked up this girl named Debbie . We all went down to “Tandy’s” In Newport
to buy some leather for our craft class. I spent $6.75 on leather for the sandals
we are supposed to make in Crafts. I didn’t get back to work until 5:30 and it
was really busy. Karen Gramsted and I worked
until 12:30. I am so tired. I
worked 10 hours today and tomorrow I have to work 8 more . My cousin Larry
Fagan has been out with his friends doing things he shouldn’t be doing like
breaking into cars and stealing 8 track players. So, Karen and I taught him a
good lesson by stealing his while he was working with us tonight although he
doesn’t know who did it. The weather was clear at 65 degrees.
6 March 1971 Saturday
I didn’t get up until 11:30 today. Mom had the
house all cleaned up for her party tonight. Grandpa Williams said she wasn’t
able to come because she has a cold. My sister Donna was hired today at Mr.
Donut for sure. She then called May Company in the Buena Park Plaza and told
them she quit. I rode my bike up to taco Bell where I met the new boy . His
name is Rod Grier. Karen Gramsted said Lorraine Stoffel quit today. Larry Fagan
came to work all mad about his stuff being stolen. I told him I’d give them
back to him if he promised to quit doing what he’s been doing. He promised. It
was another real busy night and I worked 8 and half hours from 4 to 12:30.
Around 11 Steve Gonzales and a friend of his came up to Taco bell. I haven’t
seen him since he quit Taco Bell last October . Larry drove me home because I didn’t want to ride my bike in the
dark. Charline paid me back the $50 she owed me today. I wrote Pam Husky a
letter back. It was a blue clear day
with no smog 65 degrees, A year ago at this time I had my right-side wisdom
teeth pulled.
7 March 1971 Sunday
I got up at 11 and during the day I didn’t do
much but read the Sunday paper. I did write Grandma Johnson about Donna’s new
job at Mr. Donut. Later in the afternoon I took a nap while Mom and Dad took my
nephew James to Knott’s Berry Farm. I got up from nap around 6:30 and decided I
wanted to go to the show. I went to the Edward’s Cinema at Huntington Beach and
saw “The Statue” which was silly to an asinine degree and Joe” which was very
good, about the alienation between the youth subculture and the world of blue-collar
hard hats. It was a nice day out although cool at 65 degrees. I wish it would
warm up some. In the news the Middle East Peace truce expired and the South
Vietnamese troops in Laos are under heavy attack by the North Vietnamese.
8 March 1971 Monday
I got up at 9 but didn’t go to my Philosophy
class. Instead, I went shopping for
clock radio and I bought one for $20. At Cypress I went to Psychology
and Revolutions where I talked to Mr. Reeve during a break. We had lunch
together and he said he would try to get a note written to Mr. Shumway of the
Oral History department at Cal State Fullerton as a reference. After school I
went with Bob Anderson to his house to help him in his anthropology class. Then
I went home and prepared for my Craft’s class. I turned in my stuffed butterfly
for a grade and I only got a B which disappointing.
Kent had made stuffed lips and got an A. We started on our leather project
where we are supposed to make some sandals. At the library I found some
information on the Beatles for my Speech Class talk. In the news the boxer
Frazer won a fight between himself and Mohammed Ali in the 15th
round. I think Boxing is disgusting, barbaric, and degrading to the very core
of our society. It’s a primitive gladiator spectacle for the masses. Harold
Lloyd the silent film comedic start died today. In Indochina, the Laos invasion
is going as planned, I guess. The weather is pretty at 65 degrees.
9 March 1971 Tuesday
I didn’t go to Cypress until 1 this afternoon.
I missed Speech and Creative Writing . I did go to my volleyball class and afterwards
when to work at Taco Bell. I worked 7 hours
from 3:30 to 10:30/ My cousin Larry Fagan and I worked together, and it
was a nice night out and not too busy. Leo Waldman gave us our new work
schedule. Now I work Tuesdays from 3:30 to 10:30, Thursday from 4:30 to 10:30,
Saturday from 4 to 12:30 and Sundays 10 to 4:30. Nothing happened much today to
report. I didn’t see anybody, and nobody saw me. The weather us fair at 65
degrees and there’s a full moon tonight. A month ago, we that that San Fernando
Valley earthquake and we are still having aftershocks. I seem to be just
floating along right now not knowing in what direction I am heading. I don’t
have any close personal friends right now that Ralph Ludders is married, and
John Cunningham is no longer a part of my life. I don’t seem to have any real
interests and I don’t seem to be clicking in college too. All my classes seem vague,
surrealistic, and meaningless. I hope something will solidify so I can have a basis
to plan my future. I haven’t time for a sex life and it’s too time consuming to cultivate a
friendship that won’t last through the
semester. I am tired of building sandcastles to see them washed away.
10 March 1971 Wednesday
I got up at 9:30 to get ready for school. I rode
my ten speed to Cypress and attended all my classes today. In Philosophy we
listened to Simon and Garfunkel and Beethoven. I have a Psychology test on
Monday, a Speech test on Tuesday and a Philosophy test on Wednesday. I rode my
bike back home after studying some at the library at school. It was a cold
miserable day today and I think I am coming down with something because my nose
is all clogged up. In the late afternoon, my sister Donna and I went out for a
Pizza at Me and Ed’s on Katella, then we went to Cypress to study some in the
library. I saw John Cunningham sitting there all alone but didn’t talk to him
though. It would have been too lonesome. In my craft’s class it was fun
although I didn’t get much done working on my sandals. After class ay 9, I
studied some more about the Beatles in the library for my Speech Class tomorrow.
After Donna’s philosophy class let out at 10, we went to Taco Bell to get a
Pepsi and then back to Dale Street. I studied the rest of the night until
midnight working on my Beatles talk. It was crummy weather for most of the day
and only 55 degrees. I hope I don’t get sick as it would be the first time in 2
years if I do.
11 March 1971 Thursday
I got up feeling better as my nose was dried up
but by the time school was over, I started to feel achy and had a runny nose
again. In my Speech class, we just watch a film until we were in our groups to
share our oral presentations. After class I went to the Bernstein House and had
some lunch. I sat with my sister Donna and Lent Larsen. In my Creative Writing
Class I got back my old story and Mannis
had us write a short essay in class. I didn’t go to PE as I didn’t feel well so
instead, I went to the library and studied for my psychology class. Before I
went home, I stopped at Alpha Beta and bought a lot of cold medicine. In the
evening I went to the Orange Cunty Historical Society in Santa Ana. Jim Sleeper was the speaker,
and he was really good. The meeting was held In the Bower’s Museum. I was home
by 4:30 and did some homework before going to ed. I’m feeling tired and listless,
but I have to fight off this cold. Also, today I filed for some scholarships at the Guidance Counselor’s office and in the
mail, I got some information about the Othry dormitories
at Cal State Fullerton. It was a cold but clear day at 65 degrees.
12 March 1971 Friday
I got up at 10 feeling better but not by much.
I cleaned up the kitchen for Mom and fixed breakfast. I decided I better go to
my Psychology class today to find out what is going to be on the test. I didn’t
go to Philosophy. When I came back home, I went to bed and slept until 4 then I
got up and did my school work. I read another chapter in Psychology, began to
write my philosophy paper, and wrote a short story for Creative Wring. I got
tired of studying around 19 and watched TV until 11. I then tried to go to sleep
but I wasn’t all that sleepy. I felt awful just lying-in bed, so I got up and
read this month’s issue of Time Magazine until 2 in the morning, then I went
back to bed. The weather was cool and overcast all day and around midnight it
began to rain pretty heavily. 60 degrees today.
13 March 1971 Saturday
I got up at 11 and read the newspaper. I’m
feeling much better. In fact, I feel like I must be over my cold for my nose
has cleared up and I feel less achy. It was a pretty day after last night’s
rain although it’s pretty windy out. You can see snow on the mountains today.
In the afternoon I worked on my school assignments until I had to go into work
at 4. I worked 8 and half hours with my cousin Larry Fagan. It wasn’t
especially a busy night, but we worked pretty hard. I did all the little things
that needed to be done shredding lettuce, chopping onions, shredding cheese,
and pressure-cooking beans. Mom and Dad got their taxes back today and I haven’t
even sent mind in yet. Karen Gramsted came up to work selling Girl Scout Cookies for
her little sister who is sick. I bought two boxes from her. There’s nothing
much in the news except Nixon announced his daughter’s engagement to Ed Cox. He
also is going to speak at the funeral for Whitney Young a civil rights activist
and President of the National Urban
League. 65 degree was the high today. It is supposed to rain again tomorrow. I
have so much school work to do that I don’t know where to begin.
14 March 1971 Sunday
I woke
up at 8. I didn’t have time to do anything this morning because I had to open up
Taco Bell. I worked with Jim Gramsted until 4:30. It was a really busy day. I
guess the beautiful weather outside made everybody eat out. I worked for 6 and
half hours. When I came home, my sister Charline and Dennis were over fixing
Dennis’ truck. Mom and Dad took my nephew James to Knott’s Berry Farm and when
they got back, James was really tired, and acting like a brat. I gave him the stuffed
butterfly toy I made him. It probably won’t last long. Grandma and Grandpa
Williams came over today while I was at work and also Grandma Johnson called.
She said it was awfully windy in Texas. They are going down to Lake Stamford
for a while. She also said that the ranch house where Buddy Huskey was working
burnt down. In the evening I had such a headache that it was hard for me to do
anything. I have cold sores on the roof of my mouth, and they sure do hurt. I’m
over my cold thank God. I typed up my short story for Creative Writing and studied for my Psychology test tomorrow. It
was 70 degrees today. I had a dream last night about customers still coming
after we had closed at Taco Bell. Weird.
15 March 1971 Monday
I had a test in Mr. Canova’s psychology class.
It was really hard. In Philosophy, I learned that the greatest pleasure in life
is “letting go, to be free and not restrain others in all physical and
metaphysical senses. My Revolution class with Mr. Reeve was ridiculous because
the want to be revolutionary kids in that class are all hypocritical. They have
a double standard for them self and
towards others. I didn’t do much else in school. I didn’t see Ralph Ludders in psychology class although I did talk to
Kent Larsen over in the Bernstein House. I saw John Cunningham sitting by
himself in the library and left him alone. I left Cypress at 3 and decided to
go on home to work on my Philosophy
paper there. I started typing it up but then got tired of it. I’ll finish it
tomorrow. I don’t think it’s very good anyway. Mom said my cousin Terrie
Williams got married last Tuesday to some boy in Georgia. She is only 16 years old.
Today was a pretty day, kind of warm and only 74 degrees. I didn’t go to my
Craft Class tonight because I had to work on my Philosophy paper. I’m back on a
grapefruit die to try and lose some weight. I weigh 167 pounds and want to get
down to at least 160 pounds. I sent in my tax returns today so that is taken
care of. In the news Lt. William Calley’s trial for the My Lai Massacre will go
before a jury tomorrow.
16 March 1971 Tuesday
I got up at 8 to prepare for school. I Speech1A
Svendsen says that on the 30th
we have to give a speech in front of the class besides the group presentation.
In Creative writing , Mr. Manis had me read both my stories I wrote for our dialog
assignment. It was really embarrassing to get up in front of a class and read
out aloud. Especially with my weird effeminate voice. In PE Volleyball , it was
kind of exciting and a good game though it was really hot and smoggy to be
playing on the Volleyball courts. During my break before going to PE I went to
the Bernstein House where I saw John Cunningham and said hi to him but nothing
more. I didn’t see anyone else there . I left
for work directly after school . At Taco Bell I worked for 7 hours with
Rod Drier, the new boy who I trained.
He’s still in high school I think at Western. Two guys named Marshall Burns and
Greg Troyer came up to hang out tonight.
Karen Gramsted and I always kid around with them because they are so goofy and
fun. There is something special about Greg and I had this feeling towards Greg,
so I asked him whether or not he was Capricorn and he said he was. I don’t know
why I have this attraction to Capricorn and Aries Guys and Gemini girls. I got
paid to day and cleared $65. I have to send $50 of it to Cal State Fullerton
for a deposit on the dorms. I got off work at 10:30 It was a busy day today and
I am exhausted. It was hot and smoggy and 80 degrees.
17 March 1971 Wednesday
I was up early at 7:30 and began to
type up the rest of my philosophy paper that I was too tired to do last
night. I went to both of my classes today, but psychology was out of sight and
so much fun. Mr. Canova is teaching about personality disorders, and it is really interesting. I wonder if
that is what I have that makes me want to be around John Cunningham all the
time. After class I went to Burger King for a Whopper hamburger where I had
lunch then drove home to help my sister Donna clean house. Around 5 I went back
to Cypress and went to the college library
too write some on my short story for Creative Writing. There I met this
fantastic person who was making eye
contact with me from across the table. I never saw this person before but there
was this charismatic thing between the both of us. It was really wild. I had to
leave the library to go to my art class at 7 although I wanted to stay and
maybe ask him to go get a coke. In crafts I started to assemble my sandals
together. Kent Larsen and I are going to work on ours together over at his
house this coming Friday. After class I went back to the library, but the kid
was gone so I just went home and dreamed about that person all bight. He seemed
like he had such a dynamic personality that I would like to become his friend.
The weather was hot and smoggy again today and 80 degrees. The lower part of my
back has been aching lately. Maybe from being so active in Volleyball. I hope
it goes away.
18 March 1971 Thursday
I got up at 8:30 to get ready for school. In Speech1A class we
had to give some impromptu talks. It was nerve wracking for me. I had as my topic “fear” and it came
easy because I was afraid. After class I went to the library hoping to see that
person again, but he wasn’t there. In
Creative Writing Mr. Manis just gave us
a simple assignment and then let us
leave early. My back was still hurting me,
so I didn’t go to PE. Instead, I went home to Garden Grove to clean up the
house then I went back up to Cypress to
study some more before going into work
which I did at 4:30. The health inspector was at Taco Bell, and he said when he was
done with his inspection that we were doing a good job keeping the joint clean
and safe. As much as we goof around and have fun, we still are responsible, and
Leo Waldman knows he can trust us to do our work. I worked with my cousin Larry
Fagen until 10:30. It was a typical night except when Greg Troyer and Marshall
Burns came up . They are so funny, especially Burns. When it was slow, I helped
Larry with his homework. We worked for 6 hours,
and my back is killing me. Mom and Dad are taking off for Phoenix, Arizona
for their 25th Anniversary
for a week so I guess we won’t be having a celebration here for their
anniversary. I owe Jean Horan some money that I had to borrow for gas. It was
windy this morning but warm in the afternoon.
79 degrees.
19 March 1971 Friday
Mom and Dad left this morning to go on a week
vacation for their 25th Anniversary. They went to Phoenix, and they
will return next Tuesday so my siter Donna and I have the house to ourselves. I
went to Cypress today, but Mr. Gruver didn’t show up for philosophy, so I went to the library instead to study
some. I saw John Cunningham there too, but he didn’t acknowledge me, so I
didn’t say hi. I got my test back from Psychology and I only got a Bon it but still that was better than most people in
class. I came home to Garden Grove and cleaned the house. My sister Donna went to
the La Brea Tar Pits on a field trip for her anthropology class. Last November
3 I went to the San Diego Zoo for my anthropology field trip. Around 3 I had to
go to the Tandy store in Newport to get some more leather. So far, I have spent
$20 in that stupid craft class. Tomorrow I’m going over to Kent Larsen’s house
to work on my sandals. In the evening Donna and I went shopping for some
groceries and I planted some flowers out front of the house. Jerry Smitha and
went to the United Artist Theater in Santa Ana to go to the show. We saw “P.S.
I Love You” and “Alex in Wonderland.” I didn’t care for either of them . The
weather was nice today. It felt like summer. 80 degrees.
20 March 1971 Saturday
Today is Mom and Dad’s 25th
anniversary. They were married in Olton, Texas. I got up at 8:30 so I could be
at Kent Larsen’s house at 9. He lives at 12052 St. Mark Way, way over past
Valley View off of Chapman. I spent the whole afternoon over there working on my sandals. With us were a girl
from our Craft Cas s named Jill Penny and a young friend of Kent’s named Arthur
Johansson who is also a Mormon. It was really fun working together and just
rapping but I had to leave at 3 to go get ready to into work at Tao Bell. I got
there at 4 and worked 8 and half hours with
Rod Drier. It was pretty busy until around 9:30 when Greg Troyer and
Marshall Burns came up to hang out. I had a spit ball fight with them, and I
threw ice at them. It was fun. The ice machine is leaking water and it was
everywhere in the front work area, so we were slipping and sliding waiting on customers
at the counter. Most of today was a fun. My back is still hurting though. Received “Khrushchev Remembers from
my book club today. I haven’t had time to read it yet. The weather was warm and
pretty today. There’s nothing in the news. Yesterday Jerry Smith said he still
wanted me to take that trip with him to New York City and Washington DC this
summer. I would sure like to. I guess Mom and Dad should be Phoenix by now.
21 March 1971 Sunday
I got up at 9 to get ready for work. I opened Taco Bell at 10 and worked
until 4:30. We weren’t very busy at all,
so I did a lot of prep work by shredding the blocks of cheddar cheese, cutting
up onions, and pressure cooking the pinto beans I made into frijoles. Jim
Gramsted and I worked together, and he mostly worked the counter while I worked
in the back, When I came home from work, no one was there. My sister Donna was
at work and Mom and Dad were in Arizona. I rested some before calling Kent Larsen
to tell him that I’d be over in a little bit to work some more on my sandals
for craft. I went over to his home on St. Marks at 5:30 and stayed the rest of
the day until 11:30. I finished my sandals all except for the last-minute dying
and sanding. After Kent and I were through we listened to music and had a
philosophical discussion, talking about finding a meaning to our lives. He came
from a Mormon perspective and said the purpose of man was to find joy while I
said that the purpose of man is to find salvation through loving Jesus Christ. He
told me how he had been in love with this Mormon kid named Farnsworth who
dumped him to go off on a mission for his church. I told him how much I loved
John Cunningham but unlike Kent and his boyfriend we never were physical. It
was the first time since telling Ralph Ludders about it did, I tell anyone
about my feelings about John but then Kent said he had the same feelings for
this Farnsworth kid, and it broke his heart too. When I came home to Dale
Street that night , My sister Charline and Dennis ere here spending the night because the plumbing went out in their
apartment on Nutwood. I stayed up and watched a fantastic movie called “All
This and Heaven Too” with Bette Davis and Barbara O’Neil in it. The weather was
nice today but cooler than last week at 65 degrees. The Bible says to conquer
death one only has to die in Christ.
22 March 1971 Monday
A lot of interesting things happened today most
importantly was that Don Dobmeier from
the Garden Grove Historical Society called and said the society wants me to do
a paper on the History of the formation of the Garden Grove Police Department
in 1956. He said I’ll have to interview the Mayor of Garden Grove who had newspaper clippings for most of the information I’ll need. I
didn’t go to Cypress this morning
because I was too tired from staying up so late last night. In the afternoon I
made some taquitos for my sister and Donna’s lunch and then I went to the Tandy
Leader Shop to buy some dye for y sandals. While out I also bought some chocolate
Easter Eggs for my cousin Larry Fagan, Karen Gramsted, and Jean Van der Merghal
that I brought to them at Taco Bell before heading off to Cypress. I ten went
to the college library to study some
before going to my Craft Class. In the library I met that guy again who I saw
last Wednesday. This time we talked for a while before he had to leave. In art
I think I blew my grade because I got into an argument with Miss Felos about my
sandals. I was fed up with her indifferent attitude about how hard I worked on
them and how much money I spent on making them. I only visited with Kent
Larsen in class, that’s all. Back home
in garden Grove I watched The Carol Burnett Show at 10 . It was very good with
Opera Singers as guests. The weather was a pleasant Spring like day. 70 degrees.
23 March 1971 Tuesday
I was so tired this morning . I could hardly
get out of bed, but I managed. I went to all my classes at Cypress today and
even won a volleyball game in PE. At lunch I went to the Bernstein House where
I saw my sister Donna and Kent Larsen hanging out. Donna said Mom and Dad came
in this morning from their trip while I was at school. I went to work at Taco
Bell straight after school and worked with Rod Drier for 7 hours from 3:30 until 10:30. Rod and I
had a philosophical discussion about
life and I tried to widen his narrow perspective on the world’s situation ,
primarily on Russia and Viet Nam. He’s only 17 so he doesn’t have to worry yet
about being drafted. At home, I just started to write a short story for my
Creative Writing Class before going to bed. The weather was crummy today , cold
and overcast and only 55 degrees. I haven’t had time lately to keep up with
what is happening in the news. I believe I heard that both houses of Congress have
passed an amendment to give 18-year-olds the right to vote. Now it has to be
ratified by ¾ of the states. If 18 years olds are old enough to die for their country,
they should be able to vote for the leaders who send them off to war. I weigh
now at 165 pounds but am still trying to go down even more. The flowers I planted
in the front yard are still coming along fine.
24 March 1971 Wednesday
I got up at 9 and got ready for school. I went
to Cypress but didn’t go to any of my classes. Instead, I came back home at
noon and went with Mom, Dad, and Jean
Horan to the Huntington Library in San Marino. Jean had never bene there and
the gardens were just beautiful with the Camilla’s and Azaleas in full bloom.
It was very nice to be out except for
the crummy weather. It was cool and over cast at 65 degrees. This was my fourth time being
at the Huntington Library, once with John Cunningham in 1969, once with Jerry
Smith in January of 1970 and in this last December with Grandma and Grandpa
Johnson. I remember Grandma at first didn’t want to go thinking that it was simply
a library full of books but once there and saw the Cactus garden, the Japanese Garden,
and the others along with the Huntington Mansion’s Blue Boy she had a good
time. We came home to Garden Grove around 5 and then I called Marge Swenson of
the Historical Society to find what time
this week she wanted to introduce me to the mayor of Garden Grove. She said
that this Friday at 8:30 in eh morning would work for her. I left the house
after that and went up to Cypress again to the college library to write some more on my short story and hoping to see Gary Manshardt
there again. I am puzzled by why I am attracted to him and want to get to know
him better as a friend. I didn’t go to my Craft Class because I am still peeved at Miss Felos. When
I knew that Gary wasn’t going to show up, I left and went to Taco Bell to see
Karen Gramsted and Rod Drier. Karen and I visited about old times and the kids
we used to work with. I helped them close by mopping the floors so they could
get out early. Time seems to be flying
by right now and I have so much to do. In the news funding for the Boeing
Supersonic Transport airliner was voted
down today in Congress. The length of the plane was nearly 300 feet.
25 March 1971 Thursday
I slept in today until 11. Mom and Dad went up
to Yucaipa to spend the night at Granma and Grandpa Williams. I only went to my
Creative Writing class and PE today. In Creative Writing I was surprised to
learn er have a new instructor instead of Mr. Manis, a young woman. I hope it’s
not permanent for I really like Mr.
Manis. In PE we won our game. Afterwards
I went over to the College Library to
read some until it was time to go into
work. In the library I saw and visited with Gary Manshardt some to get to know him better. He’s a cool
dude. At Taco Bell I worked 6 hours from 4:30 until 10:30 with my cousin Larry
Fagan. It was a fairly busy night.
Marshall Burns and Greg Troyer came up to bug us at 9. I really like those
kids. They are so funny and goofy. They didn’t stay long . The weather was
crummy again like it’s been for the past week, just cold and overcast at 65
degrees. In the news all the old-time conservatives ae mad as hell that the
Supersonic Transport funding was defeated
in Congress. Both of our Californian Senators Tunney and Cranston voted against it. It was considered a great victory for the
conservationists and a defeat for the Aerospace Industry. Tomorrow morning, I
am going to be introduced to the Mayor of Garden Grove.
26 March 1971 Friday
I got up at 7 this morning so I could get ready
to go meet with Reece Ballard, the mayor of Garden Grove. Marge Swenson made
the introductions and the Mayor, and I visited for about a half hour. We made
an appointment to meet again on April 6 at 8:30 for a more formal interview.
After that was over, I went up to Cypress and to both Philosophy and Psychology.
I Psychology I saw ralph Ludders and we visited
for a while . After class was over, I went to the Burger King on Lincoln and
got a Whopper for something to eat. It takes two hands to handle a whopper
which is very true. I then went back to the college library and studied until 4 when I came back home to Garden Grove. I made
a loom out of an old bike tire rim to make a wall hanging macramé project just
for the fun of it. Mom and Dad came home from Yucaipa today and my sister Charline
and Dennis came over this evening. They said their apartment on Nutwood has too
many probably, so they are moving into a
trailer hose next week located south of
Lincoln Avenue on Beach Boulevard. I watched a god show this evening with Peter Ustinov I it called Gideon. The
weather was cloudy and overcast this morning,
but it cleared up later in the day. 65 degrees. My sister Donna thinks
she’s coming down with a cold. It is going around. I wish I could quit Taco Bell,
but I can’t afford to. “One Toke Over the Line is the number one song in Los
Angeles right now. “Chicka Boom-Boom is a cute song.
27 March 1971 Saturday
Another day, one following another. This
morning I picked Mom up from the doctor’s and then worked on my wall hanging I
am making with yarn and string. My sister Charline , Dennis, and my nephew
James came over to the house. My brother-in-law
Dennis and Dad worked on Dennis’s car for much of the morning. In the
afternoon, I sanded down the rough edges of my sandals and finished them up. I went into work today at 4 and
worked until 12:30 with Rod Drier. It was a steady night. Jim Gramsted came in
to fry up some taco shells and during the first half of the evening he and I got into a fight as he was being
surly and during the last half after Jim left
Rod and I just visited some when it was slow. Rod is a good kid. There
are some really good songs out on the radio right now like “Timothy” ‘What’s
Going On,” “me and My Arrow,” Marmalade with Toast and Tea” and “Albert Flasher.”
The weather was overcast at 65 degrees.
The Children of God should love all as does God loves his children.
28 March 1971 Sunday
I got up at 9 to get ready to go in to work. I
was so tired, but I opened Taco Bell at
10 and worked until 4:30. It was a pretty busy day, and I was glad to get out of there. I worked
with Jim Gramsted for most of the day and we got along okay. When I came back
home, my sister Charline, Dennis and my nephew James were over having dinner
with Mom and Dad. James wanted to play so I took him to the Magnolia Park and pushed
him on his swing he loves so much and
played with him until they left. My sister Donna was at work so when Mom and Dad
left to go somewhere, I went over to Jeri Hadjeks house to work on our group
presentation for Speech. We are doing ours on the Beatles. I came home from
there at 9so I watched some TV and read the Sunday paper until I went to bed at
midnight. The weather today was clear and just so-so at 65 degrees. I should
fear not as the Bibles says God will love me always.
29 March 1971 Monday
Today was an exciting day for a change. I rode
my ten speed to Cypress and went to both my morning classes. After Psychology ,
I saw Gary Manshardt beneath the Piazza heading towards the library where I
joined him, and we visited some. I had to leave to go to my History of
Revolutions Class where Mr. Reeve allowed us to simply grade ourselves on the projects we
did for that class. Afterwards I got together with Jill Penney and Michael, and we had a discussion in the library . At 6
I met with the kids from my Speech class with whom we told each other what we were
going to do for our panel report. After that I went to my Craft Class at 7 and
turned in my sandal projects and Miss Felos only gave me a C+ on them. Maybe
I’ll do better on my next pair now that I know how to make them> I goofed
around with Kent Larsen and Jill Penney
for most of the time and we teased Miss Felos. I am over being mad at
her. When I rode my bike home, I hit bump in the road in the dark and was
thrown off my ten speed. I wasn’t really hurt so I just rode on home where I
did some of my homework and worked on my macrame weaving. It was an overcast morning,
but it turned out to be a pretty day at 70 degrees.
30 March 1971 Tuesday
I got up at 8 and prepared for school by
showering and shaving and getting dressed. In Speech1A I had to give a group
presentation on the Beatles influence in America’s culture. I did my portion on
George Harrison creation of Raja Rock. After that I went over to the Bernstein
House to look for Kent Larsen. I found him with my sister Donna and a bunch of
other Bernstein House kids. We just
goofed around and played cars w for a while
before most left for their classes. I didn’t go to Creative Writing . I
as supposed to have turned in a short story, but I didn’t. I went to PE but afterwards going out to the parking lot I
found that I had lost my car keys somewhere. I had this girl I knew take me to work at Taco bell at 3:30 where I worked until 10:30 with Rod Drier. It
was a super busy night plus a huge shipment of paper supplies was delivered that
we had to stock. I was really tired and
mad so when Violet came in to check on
us, I blew up at her and told her and Leo Waldman off for understaffing us. It
was a horrible night. My sister Donna brought ne an extra set of keys so I
could retrieve the Ford from Cypress. Today started out pretty nice but the
weather turned pretty cold later on at 55 degrees. In the news Charles Manson
and his family, we given the death
penalty for the Tate and LA Bianca murders. Lt. William Calley was also found
guilty on all 22 counts of murder at the My Lai massacre.
31 March 1971 Wednesday
Today is my Grandma Williams 68th
birthday. She was born in Stonewall County, Texas. Well today’s the last day of
this month so I will see you next year God willing. Today I got up at 9. I was so
tired form last night. I drove over to Tandy Leather to get some more leather
and they weren’t open yet, so I just went on to Cypress . There I messed around
with the new group of Kids that Kent Larsen introduced me to yesterday. After they all spit up at 1:30 I
went and waited for Gary Manshardt to
get out of his class so we could go to the library together to study. We were
there until 4:30 then I took him to Taco bell
to get something to eat. While there I told Karen Gramsted about the horrible
night last night. After Gary had eaten his Bell Burger and Frijoles and I had a
combination burrito we went back to
Cypress and went up to library where we studied until 6:30 when I had to leave
to go pick up Kent Larsen from his house
to take him to Craft Class. Hardly anybody attended tonight so we didn’t do much as a
class but good around. When I took Kent home, I stayed for a little while , to
listen to music and to talk. I told him about Gary Manshardt, but he made too
big of a deal out of it which kind of made me mad. I came home to Dale
Street at 10:30 and went to bed a tired boy. The weather was
nice today., clear and warm at 70 degrees. In the news Russia asked for a Germ warfare
ban treaty and the California senate passed the 18th year old voter
amendment.
