JULY
1987
July
1987- Because of numerous complaints about two fellows misusing the Gay Help
Line, after being paid for by the Royal Court for nine years, it was
temporarily disconnected. Beau Chaine approached the court and proposed a program to reconnect the line and
financially support it by payments of
organizations and bars that were
referred to callers at a rate of $50 a year per business. (84)
July
1987- Last Issue of the Triangle Magazine with John Sasserman as editor.
3 July
1987- “I saw John Sasserman at the in-between and I told him how much I admired
him, and how I was glad to see an issue of
the Triangle come out even if just a complimentary one, so that people
can see continuity in the
transition. John Sasserman said that he
thought that I was an important asset to the community. That was pleasing to
hear.” (155)
5 July
1987-“It was pot luck at Wasatch Affirmation tonight but there wasn’t very many
people attending probably from a combination of being a holiday weekend and
people being turned off from last week. Probably not more than 25 people came. Ken Francis was just fuming about Russ Lane.
He is so pissed at him I don’t think he
will come back. It was hot in the cultural hall so I suggested that we all eat
outside and have a picnic on the grass. And soon all but about 5 people were
outside eating, drinking, laughing, and fellowshipping in the truest
sense. Russ Lane stayed inside but we
outside had a good time. Anyway at one point in the kitchen with Michelle
Schulz, Billy Bikowski, and Russ Lane, Michelle kept teasing Billy saying how I
liked to show her tits off and I said Like this? And I pulled down her top
flashing her tits at Billy. Billy goes
Oh my gosh I’ve never seen them that up front before.! He was embarrassed but I
could tell he thought it was kind of funny. So he goes to Russ and acts like
he’s telling on me by saying, Ben’s going around showing off Michelle’s tits! I
act the innocent and say C’est Moi? And so while Russ turns to give me a stern
look, I say I would never do anything like this and I flashed Michelle’s tits
at Russ. Oh Russ is pissed! He growls under his breath ‘Michelle! You’re not a very good Lesbian!’
(155)
7 July
1987- Salt Lake Affirmation discussed Sports, Being Gay, and Male Bonding.
(155)
9 July
1987- “About 15 people showed up at Sunnyside Park for the last minute
planning. We voted to have the planning
committee pay for the Saliva Sisters rather than have the Sun and the
in-between shoulder the cost. It’s $300.
It was Mark LaMarr who walked the Gay Pride Petitions through the police
department, and city and county departments to okay the permit. In other words Mark took care of all the
paper work otherwise there would be no Gay Pride Day at the Park.. (155)
9 July
1987 Thursday After work went with Ken Francis to Sunnyside Park for the last
Pride Day Committee planning meeting before pride day. About 15 people showed
up at the for this last minute planning. We voted to have the Pride Day planning committee pay
for the Saliva Sisters rather then have the Sun and the In Between shoulder the
cost. Since Donny Estep is the co-owner
of the INBETWEEN and chair of pride day the measure passed. I still think that the bars who make such a
living off the Gay community could chip n a lot more financial support like
Denver's bars do. The cost is $300 and
what is that among Backstreet, The Sun, In-between, Puss and Boots and Radio
City? I should mention that it was Mark
LaMarr who walked the Gay Pride petition and permits through the police, county, and city
departments to okay Gay Pride this year. In other words Mark LaMarr took care
of the paper work otherwise there wouldn't be any Gay Pride Day at the park
this year.
10 July
1987- Prince and Princess Royale’s P.R. Ball held at Backstreet Darlene (Dave Waters) of the Lovebirds got
into a fight with another drag Queen “Juanita”(155)
11 July
1987- Debra Robinson opened a woman / mixed bar Your Place or Mine (81) “I want
this to be a mixed bar where women and men together feel confortible and at
home. There is just no way am I going to discourage or hold back the men from
here. We all need and like each other. Our non-separatism makes Salt Lake City
unique.” Said Debbie Robinson.
12 July
1987-Sunday- Donny Eastepp chaired Gay
Pride Day held at Sunnyside Park in SLC.
1st time event is sponsored by GLCCU.
Dr. Kristen Ries given a Community Service Award at Pride Day for her
work with AIDS patients and her efforts to combat AIDS and other infectious
diseases. The Award is named after her. Donny Eastepp Gay Pride Chairman
described Dr. Ries as “a woman who daily struggles with ignorance and
oppression. We are honoring a woman who fights for this community.” The Saliva
Sisters and the Lovebirds performed. About 300-400 people attended. (79) “We
arrived at Sunnyside Park about noon and
the weather was clear and warm. Gay Pride Day was festive and I bought my
Japanese parasol to keep the sun off me but Lyle Bradley said that he needed it
to keep the sun off the sound system’s mixing board so while the sound system
was preserved I was burned from sitting out under the sun for four and a half
hours. The highlight of the day of
course was the Saliva Sisters and of course Walt Larabee and the Love Birds
were good. Must have been about 800
people there all told. The Lesbians were
out in full force due probably to the fact that several softball teams were
organized. Didn’t see any Gay men
playing ball except for Volleyball. Stereotypical.” (155)

1987 Sunday About 10:30 I started getting ready for Gay Pride Day at Sunnyside
Park. We arrived at Sunnyside Park about noon and the weather was clear and
warm. Gay Pride Day was festive and brought my Japanese parasol to keep the sun
off me but Lyle Bradley said that he needed it to keep the sun off the sound
system's mixing board, so the sound system was preserved but I was burned from
sitting out under the blazing sun for 4 and 1/2 hours. The highlight of the day of course was the
Saliva Sisters and of course Walt Larabee and
The Love Birds were good. Must have been about 800 people there all told through out the
day. The Lesbians were out in force
probably due to the fact that several softball teams were organized. didn't see any Gay men playing ball except

Connally, Jerry Springer, Ken Francis, Kevin Clark, Mike Anderson, Billy
Bikowski, Ned, John Reeves, Mark LaMar, Steve Breckenbury, Shawn Donnelly, and Ben Williams(155)
16 July
1987- “At Gay Community Council about 20 people showed up. Discussed Gay Pride Day and ended with a
surplus of $800 for next year. We voted to organize a task force to investigate
whether the council should become more politically involved as a Political
Action Committee. We also decided to
sponsor a Gay Day at Lagoon and rent the Heber Creeper for an AIDS fund raising
benefit. We talked about raising funds to sponsor sending Mel Baker as a
representative of the Salt Lake Gay Community for the March on Washington in
October.” (155)
16 July
1987 Thursday I went to the Gay Community Council at 7 p.m. Ken Francis called me before I left and said
that he couldn't make t because he was sick from getting so drunk yesterday at
Radio City's Beer Bust. Poor thing. Anyway at the GCC about 20 people showed up
and we discussed Gay Pride Day. We ended with about $800 for next year and
elected Floyd Gamble to be Pride Day Chair for 1988. We gave Donny Estep a well deserved thanks
for a job well done. We also voted on
organizing a task force to investigate whether the council should be come
political that is become a political action committee. Many voiced opposition
against becoming political in the fear that they might loose their tax exempt
statuses. We decided to sponsor a Gay Day at Lagoon with Floyd Gamble
organizing it, the renting of the Heber Creeper for an AIDS fund raising
benefit, and raising funds to sponsor Mel Baker of Concerning Gays and Lesbians
as a representative of the Salt Lake Gay community for the March on Washington
in October. I met this fellow named Joe Roach tonight who is going to be a
writer for the Triangle Magazine. He's really a dynamically charismatic man.

1987 Thursday
After
work I went to Community Council where we elected John Bennett chair to replace
John Sassaman who stepped down for health reasons. We elected John for a term of six months
until elections can be held in January.
Three people ran for the position of chair, Mark LaMarr, Lyle Bradley,
and John Bennett. Lyle Bradley was
elected vice-chair. People I remember
being in attendance were Beau Chaine representing Aardvark Cafe, Russ Lane
representing Wasatch Affirmation, Bruce Barton representing MCC, Bruce Harmon,
Graham Bell activist, Mel Baker representing Concerning Gays and Lesbians on
KRCL, Laurie Bennett DJ for This Feminine Position on KRCL, Curtis Jensen
representing LGSU, David Nelson activist, his lover Michael Aaron activist,
Lyle Bradley activist, John Bennett representing the Desert and Mountain State
Conference, John Sassaman representing the Triangle, Donney Eastepp Emperor of
the Royal Court, Chuck Whyte representing the Crossroads Urban Center, Mark
LaMarr, and perhaps one or two more I can't recall. Floyd Gamble made arrangements for Gay Lagoon
Day to be August 30th. There was a major
blow up between John Sassaman and Graham Bell over the organization of the
community council. John Sassaman accused
Graham Bell of trying to use the group to advance his own agenda along with
Michael Aaron and David Nelson.
“Went to
the Gay Community Council where we elected John Bennett chair for the rest of
the year. John Sasserman stepped down
from acting chair. Three people ran for
the office, Mark LaMarr, Lyle Bradley, and John Bennett. Lyle Bradley was elected vice-chair. I’ll see
if I can name off in attendance- representing Salt Lake Affirmation myself,
Beau Chaine the Aardvark, Russ Lane the Wasatch Affirmation, Bruce Barton of
MCC, Bruce Harmon, Graham Bell activist, Mel Baker of Concerning Gays and
Lesbians, Curtis Jensen representing
LGSU, David Nelson activist, Michael Aarons of AVP, Lyle Bradley who works at
KSL, Laurie Bennett host of This
Feminine Position on KRCL, John Bennett representing Desert & Mountain
States, John Sasserman of the Triangle, Donny Eastepp Emperor of the Royal Court, Chuck Whyte of Crossroads Urban Center
and Mark LaMarr. Perhaps one or two more
I can’t recall. Gay Lagoon Day will be August 30th. There was a major blow up between John
Sasserman and Graham Bell over organizing the council. We voted to postpone organizing once again
which made a lot of people mad. Got the dope from Bruce Barton after the
meeting that Graham Bell, David Nelson, and Michael Aarons have sabotage all
attempts at organizing except on their terms and John Sasserman is sick of
it. The meeting was from 7 to 9:30 and
not a whole lot was accomplished except I got to see how some of the people’s
heads work and the dynamics of a power play between two powerful community
members. Bruce Barton said that David
Nelson is strictly a politician and will screw us over anytime it is opportune
for him to do so. Its the first time
I’ve seen real confrontation in the council. Interesting. I told Mark LaMarr that I want to get several
people from the Salt Lake Affirmation to go to the council and vote as a block
against Graham Bell and David Nelson. Interesting. Graham Bell is out to get Dr. Craig Nichols of
the Health Department for not using federal AIDS funds for the Gay
community. I hope he succeeds.” (155)

Wasatch
Affirmation has as a topic “How to talk to Church Leaders” taught by Russ Lane
“At Affirmation I was truly amazed how
different the Salt Lake Affirmation is from the Wasatch Affirmation. No one
spoke or greeted one another. It was
silent like a tomb. Because it was rap group night we split into two groups.
Russ’ group was going to discuss how to relate and talk to church leaders. Gag
me. Chip Prince took the other group and we went outside. There wasn’t any
discussion. We sat in a circle and stared at each other. I made a couple of announcements about Gay
Lagoon Day and about the Craig Nichols scandal.
But that’s about all any one did. Later after the meeting I noticed that
Heidi was sitting next to me and I could sense that she was in a lot of pain
and although I was so focused on Billy and I, I had to reach out and put my arm
around her. She melted in my arms and
started crying. I just held her and let her wash away some of the pain she was
feeling. I said to her, “You don’t have
to stop loving her, just the relationship. Keep the memories and keep them in
you treasure chest for when you need them.”
As I sat holding her I thought what
a fucking support group Russ has created where no one supports and no
one cares.”(155) 16 August 1987- Prince and Princess Royale Gary and Betty John

“Mike
Anderson, Jeff Partain, Brent Fotheringham, and I were out at 3:30 a.m. and
went to Broadway and Main Street. Lots of people were out this last weekend
before school starts Monday. Anyway we are out having fun. Still slightly
drunk, singing show tunes, oblivious to any danger. Salt Lake is so pure, so
safe, even at 3:30 a.m. So we were standing in front of Broadway Music Store on
Broadway and feeling tired, I sat down a concrete bench. I looked out at the
street then at Jeff Partain and suddenly I see this guy hitting Jeff in the
face calling him “Faggot”! Then he ran over and surprised Mike, hitting him
with an upper cut to the nose. I just went berserk. I screamed You dumb ass
fucker What the hell do you think your doing you bastard and I took after him
running. He turned around and said Come for me Faggot and he charged me legs
kicking, hands out like he knew karate but I didn’t care. I was enraged. I dove
on top of him, grabbed his arm behind him and I pulled his long hair so hard
his head snapped back. I then threw him down of the concrete sidewalk. I wrestled him down pinning him and screaming
at him all the time You Bastard. I
really don’t remember if I hit him or anything because it all happened so fast
and my adrenaline was rushing like mad. However later I had a goose egg size
bump on my forehead and my left hands had cuts across the knuckles which I am
not sure whether I got from hitting him or scraping my hand on the sidewalk as
I pulled him down. While I had him on the ground Mike grabbed the kid’s bike
and was going to smash him in the face with it after recovering from the
stunning blow he got. But these two guys who had been with this asshole stopped
Mike and it is just as well. We are
better people, but I told the basher that if he wanted his bike back he better
get the hell out of here. He gave up struggling and we let him ride off with him shouting back at us Faggots! I
was so angry I yelled at the top of my lungs You’re the Fag! Coming here trying
to prove your masculinity you piss ass bastard! You are the fag! I was totally
out of it. Strange though, it was not in us to hit him once he was down. Truly
we are a gentle angry people. Jeff Partain was okay just stunned and everything
happened so fast that Brent never had a chance to respond to the
situation. It’s something you don’t
expect to happen. That’s not exactly
correct. We do expect to be attacked
because we are Gay but when it does its
still a shock. Later some other Gay men
came over who had witnessed the attack. One said that he knew this guy was
looking for trouble and over heard him say to his friends that he had a knife.
Earlier before the attack I saw 3 cop cars cruising around the block hassling
Gays who were out but when we were being bashed not one came around. About 4
a.m. this woman cop pulled up next to us and we were still shaken from the
attack and she said to us “Take the Party home “ and I looked right at her and
said We have just been attacked! She said she recognized the description of the
dude and said she wished we would have apprehended him and turned him over to
the cops because yesterday he had hit someone with a rock and put him in the
hospital. What really disgusted me was that the cops had this guys description
and he rode around us several times on his bike before he attacked us so why didn’t those cops who were hassling
Gays for being on the corner talking spot him?
He was not hard to miss, a kid about 17 years old with long black
stringy hair riding a land cruiser bike.

BASHING “At 4 p.m. I went to a meeting at the Sun Club between the Gay

spokesman for the Gay Community. Ben Williams, David Nelson, Greg Garcia, Chris
Brown, Satu Servigna, Donny Eastepp, Joe Redburn, and Mac Hunt and his partner
Wirth were there as representatives of the community. Mayor DePaulis seemed
forth right and very candid. He said he would try and appear at next
year’s Gay Pride Day. He addressed concerns about police harassment at the
bars, the closure of Jeff’s Gym etc.
Anyway the funny thing was as we all were standing outside the Sun with
the Mayor and his staff, a car sped by and yelled FAGGOTS. I wonder if the people in the car would shit

At 4 PM went to a meeting at the Sun Club set up by Graham Bell between the Gay Community and Mayor Palmer de Paulis
and his staff. Graham Bell was the spokesman for the community and just David
Nelson, Greg Garcia, Chris Brown, Satu Sgnigna, Donny Eastepp, the owner of the
Sun and the two owners of Backstreet were there to represent the community.
Mayor DePaulis seemed pretty forth right and candid. Questions about why there
wasn’t better lighting in front of the bars which protects gay bashing and harassment
of people waiting to enter the club. The
Mayor said that he wasn’t aware that it was a problem. He did say that he would try to appear at
next year's Gay Pride Day and he addressed questions about police harassment of
the bars and the city's closure of Jeff's Gym, a Gay Bath House. Anyway as we were all leaving the Bar and
standing outside the Sun n broad day light with the Mayor and his staff, a car
sped by and yelled "FAGGOTS".
Well welcome to the world of Gay harassment, Mr. Mayor. I wonder if the people in the car would shit
if they knew who they just yelled faggot at!
